Spirit to launch new nonstop flight from Pittsburgh to Houston
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — Spirit is adding a new nonstop flight out of the Pittsburgh International Airport.
The ultra-low-cost-carrier will launch daily, nonstop seasonal service between Pittsburgh and Houston on June 5.
With the addition of Houston, Spirit now flies to 12 destinations out of Pittsburgh. It’s the third route the carrier has added from PIT this year.
“Our new, daily service from Pittsburgh to Houston provides an affordable option to travel between the two cities and easily connects family and friends in the Steel City and Space City,” John Kirby, Spirit’s vice president of network planning, said in a news release on Blue Sky News’ website.
The airport says the growth of ultra-low-cost carriers like Spirit is a major component of its strategy to provide more nonstop and affordable choices to people coming and going from Pittsburgh.
“We’re thrilled Spirit continues to grow in the Pittsburgh market with three new routes in 2024,” said Bryan Dietz, senior vice president of air service and commercial development at PIT, in a press release. “Adding more low-cost service is one of our top priorities, and Spirit continues to recognize the strong demand in the Pittsburgh region.”
The airport says the announcement comes after it surpassed 2 million passengers during the first quarter for the first time since 2019 and total passenger numbers climbed 10% in March.
PITTSBURGH, Pa. (KDKA) — A lot is going on in Pittsburgh this weekend, from the Pirates starting a home stand at PNC Park to runners hitting the streets for the Pittsburgh Marathon.
There is also a new flower show opening at Phipps Conservatory. The “Summer Flower Show: Under the Sea” officially opens on Saturday to the public. And while you won’t need a swimsuit or snorkel for this show, you will catch a wave of ocean vibes if you decide to stop by.
Mike Bechtel, the indoor display manager at Phipps, said that there is a lot to love about this new show.
“I love being immersed at the like the bottom of the ocean,” said Bechtel. “That’s kind of what you are going to see when you walk through the show. You are going to be seeing things in the air that are normally swimming in the ocean. So, it’s really like you’re crawling along the bottom of the sea.”
This aquatic-themed show has been a massive undertaking for Phipps. Planning for the show started at this time last year, and the team at the conservator has been building out this show for the last three weeks.
“You are going to see a lot of topiaries, which are planted frames,” said Bechtel. “So, we put little plug plants in each topiary. And as they grow out, it just gives a different texture. You are also going to see some animatronic stuff involved in the plants, but the highlight I love is the plant pallet. It’s so neat. Everything’s just weird and oddly shaped. It’s all very tropical. So nothing you are going to find in your own backyard.”
Now, if you want to make the summer flower show part of your world, the show runs through the first week of September.

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — From thousands of runners to thousands of sports fans, it’s going to be a busy weekend in Pittsburgh!
Leave early and plan on being patient if you’re going to be heading into the city this weekend as the 2024 Dick’s Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon will be taking place and the Pirates are also hosting three games at PNC Park.
Pirates facing Rockies this weekend
The Buccos will kick off a three-game series tonight against the Colorado Rockies.
Martin Perez will be on the mound for the Pirates and the first pitch is set for 6:40 p.m.
Be prepared for increased traffic on the North Shore as it’s a Zambelli fireworks night, which will take place moments after tonight’s game ends.
2024 Pittsburgh Marathon
Festivities for the 2024 Dick’s Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon will get underway tomorrow.
The race is sold out this year and it’s the largest sporting event of the year for the city.
Runners can start picking up their race packet and bibs starting at 11:00 a.m. at the Health and Fitness Expo inside the David L. Lawrence Convention Center.
While there are a lot of people running in the races this weekend, those runners bring fans with them as well, with roughly 250,000 spectators expected in town within the next few days.
“We have a record number of participants this year,” said P3R CEO Troy Schooley. “Over 42,000 people will be taking to the streets, stating with our kids’ program which is the largest in the country. 8,500 kids on Saturday, 5,500 person 5K and then shifting to Sunday, we have 23,000 people who will either be doing the half marathon, the marathon, or the relay. “
Parking limited in Downtown
Restrictions are already in place around Point State Park.
Starting at 12:00 p.m. today, the Boulevard of the Allies will be closed between Stanwix Street and Wood Street.
What roads will close in the city?
On Saturday, road closures for the 5K, Champion Mile and Kids Marathon will begin at 6:45 a.m. and continue through noon on the North Side and Downtown.
For the marathon, half marathon, relay and new 4-mile fitness challenge on Sunday, road closures will start at 1:30 a.m. and continue through 2:30 p.m. Several streets Downtown will be completely closed to traffic. People parked in these areas who may need to get out during the race are encouraged to park somewhere else.
