Party Cake Shop in Brookline ready for a busy Fat Tuesday
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — Today is Fat Tuesday, the last day before Ash Wednesday — but for many, it’s paczki day!
KDKA’s Megan Shinn was live inside Party Cake Shop along Brookline Boulevard as they opened their doors for what’s expected to be a busy day.
Customers were lined up when the doors opened at 6 a.m. and Party Cake Shop co-owner Zach Zebrowski told KDKA they expect to make at least 300 dozen paczki today as part of the long-standing Polish tradition for Fat Tuesday.
Zebrowski said his crew spent 12 hours working and preparing for the big day, detailing the long process of making and cutting the dough, frying, holing, and filling the paczki before they’re ready to hit the display shelves.

Paczki are round, baseball-sized pastries that are generally sugar-coated or glazed and stuffed with fruit or cream filling.
The word ‘paczki’ means ‘little package’ and co-owner Michelle Zebrowski said she even knows that KDKA-TV anchor David Highfield prefers the raspberry-filled variety!

One of the Pittsburgh Penguins’ few silver linings this season has been the performance of their first line. Many have celebrated Sidney Crosby’s refusal to age and Rickard Rakell’s goal-heavy bounce back. Fewer have mentioned Bryan Rust’s impact on that line.
Rust has quietly pieced together a stellar season. His 25 goals are the third most, and his 54 points are fourth most of his 11-year career.
The 32-year-old forward is four goals and five points away from setting new career highs in both categories. He is also three goals away from reaching 200 in his career.
However, there is one milestone that Rust has been chasing for the past few seasons. Scoring 30 goals in a season. Last season was the closest he came, scoring 28 goals in 62 games.
It’s clear to anyone who pays attention that Rust has performed at the level of a 30-goal scorer most of his NHL career, but he has yet to reach that milestone. With ten games left, Rust needs five more goals to reach that plateau.
If it comes down to the final week, Rust has a few favorable opponents to close the season. The Penguins play the New Jersey Devils, Boston Bruins, and Washington Capitals to finish the season. Those teams are 1st, 5th, and 2nd among the teams Rust has scored the most against during his career.
It’s a small consolation for an intense competitor who will miss the playoffs for a third consecutive season, but one that sends an integral piece of the Penguins into the offseason on a positive note.

A man has surrendered to police after a standoff in Crafton Heights.
According to police, the standoff happened at a home on Dickens Street. One neighbor said that she saw and heard that man who was inside the home threaten to shoot the police.
That’s when police called in the SWAT team around 6:45 p.m. when it began as a domestic incident between a woman and her son.
The woman told 911 her son was intoxicated and making threats as well as throwing things inside the home.
A neighbor said police ordered the man through a window to come out a couple of times. Police then said they would come inside, but he then threatened to kill officers if they did.
Police were then given information that the suspect had a real gun.
The woman was ultimately able to escape safely and police were able to get the man to surrender around 9 p.m. with no issues.
However, neighbors said it was shocking to see play out.
“We noticed that the SWAT team was here and they were evacuating all the neighbors and stuff,” said Greg Swogger, a neighbor. “Later on we found out that he had taken something and had just gone completely crazy and was threatening to shoot the police.”
The suspect’s mother said her son has mental health issues and police said he was in crisis when they were called.
It’s not yet known if he will face any criminal charges.
