STATE COLLEGE – When Penn State first began Big Ten football competition three decades ago, Joe Paterno had a knack for getting bye weeks scheduled ahead of his big games.

It didn’t seem to matter much, but the Nittany Lions somehow finagled open dates before Michigan and Ohio State in both 1993 and 1994. When they were pretty good, they lost (in 1993); when they were really good, they won (in 1994).
