Bull headed for slaughterhouse escapes, goes on rampage before being fatally shot in Massachusetts
A bull bound for a Massachusetts slaughterhouse briefly escaped its fate Monday after it crashed through electrified fences, jumped a berm, ran across on an interstate and swam through a lake, authorities said.
However, police officers in Raynham, south of Boston, fatally shot the 1,300-pound animal when it charged at them, police said in a news release.
Workers at a nearby farm were loading the bull onto a truck bound for the slaughterhouse Monday morning when it became frightened and ran through multiple fences, including some that were electrified, the police department said.
The bull leaped over a 6-foot berm and ran onto Interstate 495, where it caused a three-vehicle crash, the department said. One of the injured drivers was taken to a hospital, it said.
The animal fled into some woods and ran into Lake Nippenicket, where, the police department said, officers and farm staffers spotted it swimming from shore.
When the bull began “aggressively” swimming toward the group, the department said, an officer fired at the animal with a department-issued rifle.
“The shots were ineffective at stopping the animal, and the bull got out of the water and began to charge at those on shore,” the department said.
The officer fired several more shots, striking the animal in the leg and disabling it, police said. The police department released a brief video from an officer’s body camera that captured the encounter.
The officer’s rifle was not powerful enough to euthanize the animal, the police department said, so the farm’s owner used a hunting rifle to kill it.
“Facing a charging 1,300-pound bull is not something you go into your shift thinking is going to happen, but our officers were able to respond and effectively handle the situation and prevent further injury and destruction,” Police Chief David LaPlante said, according to the release.
A mother charged with two counts of murder after the deaths of her two young children agreed Monday in Rutland County Superior Court to be transferred to Massachusetts, where she will face the charges.
The Massachusetts State Police have charged Janette MacAusland, 49, with murdering her two children, ages 6 and 7, after they were found dead at their home in Wellesley, Massachusetts, Friday.
According to a Bennington police press release, MacAusland arrived at a relative’s home in Vermont on Friday night with a neck injury, bleeding and appearing “highly distraught.”
The relatives called the Bennington police, who then prompted police in Wellesley, Massachusetts, to check on MacAusland’s children. Both were found dead. No details have been released about the cause or manner of death.
The Bennington Police Department arrested MacAusland and took her to Marble Valley Correctional Facility in Rutland, where she has been held without bail.
Appearing virtually in court Monday, MacAusland agreed to waive her right to a hearing and be immediately transferred back to Norfolk County in Massachusetts.
“She’s decided that the best thing is to get back to Massachusetts as soon as possible and address these charges,” Jeff Rubin, her attorney, said at the hearing.
The children’s deaths follow a custody battle between MacAusland and her former husband, according to the Associated Press. MacAusland’s husband filed for divorce in October after nine years of marriage and sought custody of the children and family home.

Janette MacAusland joined the court hearing from Marble Valley Correctional Facility in Rutland and waived her extradition rights, signing a waiver to be transported back to Massachusetts.
The case began Friday night, when Bennington police were reportedly called for a welfare check on MacAusland. Police say she arrived at a family home distraught and with a neck injury.

While speaking with police, officers reportedly became increasingly concerned for her children in Wellesley, Massachusetts — a boy and a girl, ages 7 and 6.
Authorities there conducted a welfare check and found the children dead.
MacAusland was arrested and charged with murder.
The Boston Globe reports MacAusland was going through a contentious divorce and seeking custody of both children.
A check-in will be required in two weeks to ensure she is picked up. In the meantime, she remains in jail without bail.

BENNINGTON, NY (WNYT) – 49-year-old Janette MacAusland was arrested Friday in Bennington, VT; she is accused of killing her two children in Wellesley, MA.
Bennington Police said they got a call around 9:15 Friday night to conduct a welfare check about a woman that had arrived at a family home in Bennington appearing highly distraught. That woman was Janette MacAusland.
It was also reported to police that MacAusland had a visible neck injury and was actively bleeding.
Benington Police said as officers tried to talk to the woman she became increasingly concerned about the welfare of her children.
Bennington Police then requested that Wellesley Police perform a welfare check on the children at the home in Wellesley, MA.
Around 9:50 p.m. Friday night, Wellesley Police called Benington Police and told them that MacAusland’s two children were found dead inside her home.
Woman accused of killing two children arrested in Bennington
Bennington Police then took MacAusland into custody as a fugitive from justice. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts charged Janette MacAusland with two counts of murder for the death of her children.
MacAusland is now being held at the Marble Valley Correctional Facility without bail, where she awaits to be transferred to Massachusetts to answer to the murder charges.
MacAusland is scheduled to be arraigned Monday in Rutland Superior Court.
