Despite serious damage from the December storm, Meserve’s Market in Wells, Maine, is back!
The owner Bob Meserve told News Center Maine that they weren’t quite ready to reopen, but they just couldn’t wait any longer! They had been closed for six weeks because of the first of many destructive storms Maine has had to deal with.
Meserve’s was closed for 45 days, and had to do extensive renovations due to damage, including new floors, ceilings, and lights. Just the financial aspect of that was daunting. Bob said to News Center Maine,

Dealing with the unknown. ‘Is the money going to come in? How am I going to pay the contractors?’ How is the insurance….there’s a lot of unknowns.
But, that’s when the community who loves and supports you lets you know that it’s going to be okay. Maybe Merserve’s knew they were popular, but not having them around for so long proved that they were loved and missed. On their recent opening day, they had neighbors pouring in. Some even brought gifts! You know you are loved when people want to show you how much you mean to them by bringing you gifts!
It was shocking when a tree crashed into the back of the building. Then the rain poured in, and they were left with everything needing rebuilding. They scrambled to save as much inventory as possible. Then they faced the long battle to recover and continue on the tradition and routine for so many Mainers.
Thanks for reopening, Meserve’s! We’ve got your back.

A collective of environmental, arts and Indigenous-led organizations is collaborating to produce We Are the Watershed, a two-day event aimed at reconnecting humans with nature and revitalizing the health of waterways, estuaries, and the bay in Peskotomuhkatikuk (traditional Passamaquoddy territory). Events, including theatrical performances, music, culinary experiences and an exhibition of submitted artwork, will be held on May 1 and 2 at Eastport Arts Center (EAC). A publication of written and visual works will also be released with proceeds to support conservation efforts and spreading awareness of their impacts.
Submissions sought: Written and visual works are currently sought from artists and creatives on both sides of the border across Peskotomuhkatikuk for the publication, which will be sold by donation at the May event. Proceeds from the sale will be dedicated to related community-building efforts, public engagement, and continued restoration efforts. The deadline for digital submission for the publication is April 1.
Physical works can be dropped off at EAC Sunday, April 26 between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. to be a part of the exhibition, which will run May 1 through 15. Artists under 18 will receive 100% of the proceeds if they opt to put their pieces up for sale during the exhibit, which will run May 1 through May 15. Artists over 18 will receive 70% of the proceeds with the remainder going toward promoting awareness of and supporting conservation efforts for the Passamaquoddy Bay.
