Martin Engstrom, 'Marty on the Mountain' – a Maine Legend Has Passed Away
For 38 years we knew what was happening on Mount Washington thanks to Martin Engstrom Junior.
Better known to his fans as “Marty on the Mountain,” Martin would provide weather reports from atop New England’s highest peak.
Sadly, Martin’s family announced the devastating passing of the Maine legend. He was 86 years old and passed away on January 4, 2024, after an illness.

Martin’s daughter Anita Williams said,
I just lost my rock…now I have to be the rock.
I knew Marty like most people from the 38 years he reported the weather from Mount Washington…even though he wasn’t a weatherman.
According to WMTW, Marty was an engineer, not a weatherman.
Engstrom’s actual job was to man the WMTW transmitter on top of New England’s tallest peak. He worked the sophisticated equipment that kept the station on the air.
He interviewed with WMTW, where he worked all 38 years, about his fondest memories from the top of New England’s tallest mountain.
I got to meet Marty when he was rightfully inducted into the Maine Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 2019. He was humble, funny, loving and will be truly missed.

Marty would have been 87 years old on April 28. He lost his wife Rosa Lee five years ago.
His family is just learning of this sad news and will have more details about services and where we will be able to pay respects to a man who was a part of our lives for decades.
Our thoughts go out to his family and close friends during this difficult time.

We Are the Watershed call for art
A collective of environmental, arts and Indigenous-led organizations is collaborating to produce We Are the Watershed, a two-day event aimed at reconnecting humans with nature and revitalizing the health of waterways, estuaries, and the bay in Peskotomuhkatikuk (traditional Passamaquoddy territory). Events, including theatrical performances, music, culinary experiences and an exhibition of submitted artwork, will be held on May 1 and 2 at Eastport Arts Center (EAC). A publication of written and visual works will also be released with proceeds to support conservation efforts and spreading awareness of their impacts.
Submissions sought:
Written and visual works are currently sought from artists and creatives on both sides of the border across Peskotomuhkatikuk for the publication, which will be sold by donation at the May event. Proceeds from the sale will be dedicated to related community-building efforts, public engagement, and continued restoration efforts. The deadline for digital submission for the publication is April 1.
Physical works can be dropped off at EAC Sunday, April 26 between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. to be a part of the exhibition, which will run May 1 through 15. Artists under 18 will receive 100% of the proceeds if they opt to put their pieces up for sale during the exhibit, which will run May 1 through May 15. Artists over 18 will receive 70% of the proceeds with the remainder going toward promoting awareness of and supporting conservation efforts for the Passamaquoddy Bay.
