Knife-wielding man slashes NYPD officer in face with 14-inch blade, police shoot him dead in pursuit

A knife-wielding man was shot dead during a police pursuit in New York City after entering a police precinct and slashing an officer in the face with a 14-inch blade, authorities said Sunday.
The attack unfolded just before 5:30 a.m. at the 73rd Precinct in Brooklyn’s Brownsville neighborhood when a man entered the building through an employee entrance, NYPD Chief of Patrol Philip Rivera told reporters at a briefing.
When a female officer stopped the man and told him to go out and enter through the front door, the man pulled out “a large butcher knife” and slashed her in the face, Rivera said.
The female officer fought off the knife-wielding man, who then ran out through the back of the precinct. An officer used a taser as the man escaped, but the device was not effective in stopping him, Rivera said.

Several officers chased after the man, ordering him to drop the knife. The man did not comply with the officers’ commands, Rivera said.
A short time later, the man lunged at an officer with the knife. Several officers then opened fire on the knife-wielding man, striking him numerous times. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Officers recovered the 14-inch blade at the scene.

The officer who was slashed in the face was treated at a hospital, where she is recovering and in “good spirits,” Rivera said.
“This situation could have turned out very differently,” he said. “This is the risk that every NYPD officer faces every single day.”
Rivera said investigators had a tentative identification on the knife-wielding man, but could not immediately release it to the public.
Police said the incident remains under investigation.

Pittsburg softball improved to 16-4 on the season by sweeping host Kansas City Piper 17-1 in five innings and 15-3 in six innings Saturday afternoon.
Breck Slaughter earned the win in both games. She allowed one run on two hits with 10 strikeouts and two walks over five innings during the opener. Then, she allowed one run on two hits with three strikeouts and two walks over three innings.
AnnaLynn Hudson pitched the last three innings of the day for the Purple Dragons.
Offensively, Pittsburg scored 17 runs on 20 hits during the opener and all nine Dragons reached the hit column. Kenleigh Warford led with four hits, Breck Slaughter and Micah Gomez each had three and Brecken Campbell, Brette Pasteur, Laney Trisler and Emily Shriver each had two. Slaughter, Trisler and Gomez each doubled twice and Pasteur and Shriver also recorded two-baggers. Brilee Mantooth homered. Gomez led the Dragons with four RBI, Campbell had three and Trisler, Mantooth and Shriver drove in two each.
The Dragons closed out their sweep with 15 runs on just 11 hits. Pasteur had a monster performance at the plate with four runs scored, three hits in three at-bats, two home runs and five RBI; she also worked a pair of walks and proved to be an utter pain for Piper pitchers Reagan Asbury and Harper Cordill.
Campbell also homered and finished with three hits for the Dragons. Slaughter and Shriver both finished with two hits and both seniors doubled.
Pittsburg won four games during the week and outscored Labette County, Independence and Piper by a combined 59-11. The Dragons return to Southeast Kansas League play on the road Monday against Independence; the Dragons beat the Bulldogs 14-1 in five innings last Thursday in Pittsburg.
The Dragons are looking to wrap up at least a share of the SEK League title.

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (WTNH) — A New Haven man was sentenced to six years in federal prison on Monday for violating the terms of his release after he was found in possession of narcotics, including meth pills shaped like Super Mario in 2024.
According to the Office of the U.S. Attorney for the District of Connecticut, 33-year-old Ronnell Rogers was pulled over in New Haven on May 2, 2024, and was found with fentanyl, methamphetamine, cocaine, heroin packaged for distribution, and meth pills shaped like “cartoon characters,” including Mario.
Rogers had been sentenced to 37 months in federal prison in 2022 for drug distribution and firearm possession, as well as 14 months for violating the terms of his supervised release for a previous federal conviction for unlawful possession of ammunition by a felon. He was released in March 2024.
Rogers has been in federal custody since May 30, 2024, and pleaded guilty to possession of fentanyl with intent to distribute and distribution of fentanyl.
