Search launched for 3 men after boating crash in Connecticut
The US Coast Guard was scouring the waters at the mouth of the Connecticut River on Monday night for three men who were missing after a boating crash, an official said.
Nine people were aboard a boat when it hit a break wall at high speed near Harbor One Marina in Old Saybrook, Connecticut, according to Joey Kellems, lead command center controller with the US Coast Guard’s Long Island Sound sector. The boat broke into pieces and all the passengers went into the water, Kellems said Monday night.
Six people were rescued, but search and rescue teams have yet to find the other three, who were not wearing life jackets, Kellems said.
Details about the time and circumstances of the crash were not immediately available.
The Coast Guard was responding with air and water support, Kellems said. Search and rescue teams from mutual aid agencies also were on the scene.
The coastal town of Old Saybrook is about 30 miles east of New Haven, Connecticut.
This is a developing story and will be updated.

Dog found in poor condition is euthanized in East Hartford
A dog that was found lying in the grass in poor condition has been euthanized in East Hartford. Now, a reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest of whoever hurt her.
East Hartford Animal Control said the dog was found on Smith Drive Thursday.
The dog, which is a young female, was transported to a nearby veterinary hospital where she had to be put down due to the severity of her condition.
Animal control officers said the dog is a white and tan small breed dog. They released photos, but the images are graphic and may be disturbing to see.
Authorities are looking for information from the public that could help identify the dog’s owner or those responsible for her condition and abandonment.
East Hartford Animal Control said that due to the severity of the dog’s condition, she couldn’t have gotten herself to the location she was found; she had to have been placed there, according to authorities.
Desmond’s Army Animal Law Advocates are offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of whoever is responsible.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Animal Control by calling 860-291-7572 or emailing animalcontrolofficersemail@easthartfordct.gov. All calls can remain confidential.

Lifeguard coverage reduced to two state parks, ending after Labor Day
Hard to believe but the summer beach season is wrapping up.
The state is already scaling back the number of lifeguards. And soon there won’t be any coverage at state parks.
At Hammonasset Beach State Park in Madison, families were enjoying Labor Day weekend swimming on the shoreline.
“It’s pretty warm. I went in and usually I have to be really hot to go in the water,” Bridget Finney said.
The Finney family from Simsbury found a little peace of mind to know there are lifeguards watching their little girls in the water here.
“Yeah, that’s great. Yeah. Well, when we showed up and we saw they were on duty till six or whatever, that’s just a burden off our shoulders, you know, knowing that they’re there. It’s definitely, yeah, it’s nice that they’re here,” Patrick Finney said.
Over the holiday weekend, lifeguard coverage has been reduced to just two parks now including Hammonasset.
You’ll find lifeguards in the chairs at Hammonasset and Rocky Neck in East Lyme on Monday. They will be there from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Monday will be their last day at both spots and after that there will be no lifeguards on duty at any state park swimming area.
This year, despite a nationwide shortage, 90 lifeguards were hired to watch over eight swim locations.
“I mean, you definitely feel safe having lifeguards here. Absolutely,” Loredana Ingenito said.
Also the state’s water quality sampling program is ending and after Labor Day, you’re urged to swim at your own risk.
