Police locate hairless cat stolen from CT hotel; animal to be returned to owner
A cat that was allegedly stolen from a Shelton hotel room in January has been located and authorities plan to reunite it with its owner.
The hairless cat named Princess and several items, including two designer handbags, were reported stolen from the hotel room on Jan. 22, police said.
The suspect in the cat burglary at the Shelton hotel room was arrested in February. Zyair Lopez, 20, of Bridgeport was arrested and charged with third-degree burglary, third-degree larceny, conspiracy to commit third-degree burglary and conspiracy to commit third-degree larceny, police said.
Shelton police said detectives conducted a thorough investigation that resulted in the arrest of Lopez and Toni Douglas-Alves, 24, but were unable to locate the cat.
However, week detectives this week received a call from a woman in Massachusetts, who reported that she had purchased a hairless cat several months ago in Bridgeport, police said. The woman told police that she had learned the cat may have been the animal stolen from the Shelton hotel in January.
“We appreciate the integrity of the female who purchased the cat for $1,300 and notified police once she learned the cat was stolen so the animal could go back to the rightful owner,” police said in a statement.
Detectives met with the woman Saturday and she turned over the cat after confirming it was the stolen animal, police said. The cat will be reunited with the victim, police said.
However, detectives are still investigating the circumstances regarding the sale of the stolen cat, police said..
