Indiana Fever reacts to Caitlin Clark WNBA Draft announcement, has No. 1 pick

The Indiana Fever officially has its presumed No. 1 overall pick: Iowa basketball’s Caitlin Clark.

The Hawkeyes’ star senior guard announced on Thursday she will forgo her COVID-19 year of eligibility and declare for the 2024 WNBA Draft, marking Sunday’s Iowa game against Ohio State as her final regular-season game inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

And if there needed to be any reminder that Clark is the presumed top selection in April’s 2024 WNBA Draft, the Fever reminded the women’s basketball world who holds that pick (and to order their tickets for the upcoming season):

It is the second straight year the Fever has the top overall pick, as the organization took South Carolina’s Aliyah Boston No. 1 overall last April. The idea of Clark and Boston teaming up in the WNBA for the Fever has been a storyline all season long and will continue to be leading up to the draft, given their history and that their styles of play complement each other.

They are the last two national players of the year, with Boston winning in 2021-22 and Clark in 2022-23, and played against each other just once in college. Clark and the Hawkeyes came out on top last year in the Final Four when Iowa took down Boston and South Carolina 77-73.

“Well, the Indiana Fever could have the first pick, so maybe we’ll have the duo,” Clark told Boston in October at the Big Ten Media Day. “I don’t know. Remains to be seen. But me and Aliyah might be teammates at some point, you never know.”

Clark added: “We were teammates before, so maybe we’ll have to reconnect.”

Indeed they were, as both were teammates on the Team USA basketball circuit on the 2019 USA Women’s U19 team. For what it’s worth, Boston also seems to be aware of her and Clark’s potential reunion:
