BIOGRAPHY

Why a Tech Power Player? For advancing a more sustainable way of developing one of the world’s most crucial resources.

Tadeu Carneiro is the CEO and chairman of Boston Metal, a Woburn-based startup developing “greener” steel. Steel manufacturing is a major producer of greenhouse gas emissions, but Boston Metal is pioneering a decarbonized process, called molten oxide electrolysis, that would use electricity to convert iron ore into steel. The goal is to commercialize the technology by 2026. Carneiro has led the company since 2017, locking in a $120 million investment from steelmaker ArcelorMittal, clinching the 2023 North American Company of the Year award from the Cleantech Group, and establishing a subsidiary in Brazil. Carneiro came to Boston Metal after nearly three decades at CBMM, a Brazil-based supplier of products and technology based on the metal niobium. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in metallurgical engineering from the Polytechnic School of the University of São Paulo in Brazil and a master of business administration from the Katz Graduate School of Business at the University of Pittsburgh.
