SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) – A majority of voters in three South Dakota counties say using machines to count ballots is okay with them.

Initiated measures in Gregory, Haakon and Tripp Counties failed Tuesday night.

If approved, election officials would have been required to hand count all ballots.

Those who supported the measures pointed to concerns over election security.

But county clerks told Dakota News Now that it’s not possible to hack into a tabulation machine. They also agree that hand counting would increase the cost of holding elections, including hiring more people to count ballots on election nights.
