Polar Plunge fundraiser benefits Special Olympics South Dakota
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) – Although it was windy on Saturday, it was also warm; and for those participating in this year’s Polar Plunge fundraiser, the water had to be a bit refreshing.
In collaboration with the South Dakota Law Enforcement Torch Run and several sponsors, the Polar Plunge raises money for Special Olympics South Dakota.
The water was a bit cold in the mobile plunge unit, but better than last year, according to Sgt. Maria Munkvold with the Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office.
“It’s shocking at first, but you get used to it. You’re freezing for a reason, so I’m pretty excited to be able to do it for them. I think it was about 55 degrees in the water. Last year it was colder, so I can’t complain,” Sgt. Munkvold said.
All proceeds from the event go to supporting Special Olympics South Dakota for year-round sports training and competitions, health screenings, and leadership opportunities.
Polar Plunges were held in Huron, Vermillion, and Rapid City in February, and in Spearfish and Pierre in March.
