Jamie Smith formally launches bid for Sioux Falls Mayor
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) – Even though the election for the next Mayor of Sioux Falls isn’t until next year, the race has already begun.
State Senator and former Gubernatorial candidate Jamie Smith has thrown his hat into the ring, kicking off his campaign on Saturday in his bid to lead South Dakota’s largest city.
Smith launched his campaign outside of the Washington Pavilion where he addressed his supporters.
Smith said his personal story has been one of change, just like Sioux Falls has seen over the past several decades.
He said as the city continues to grow, many questions about the direction of the city remain and he is ready to step up to the task.
“Make no mistake. The leader we choose for this moment, for this chapter in our city’s story will determine the answers to these questions. Who we elect to be our next mayor will determine whose advice we seek, and whose concerns we prioritize, as we enter the next phase of growth,” Smith said.
While other potential candidates have expressed interest in running, the only other candidate to enter the race at this time is David Zokaites, who last ran for Mayor in 2022.

Fact brief: Does South Dakota require front license plates?
(South Dakota News Watch) – Yes. South Dakota is one of almost 30 states that require front and back license plates on vehicles, though there are a couple of exceptions.
Vehicles that are used for “occasional transportation, public displays, parades and related pleasure hobby activities” can use a rear-only plate. The plates cost $25 in addition to the normal registration cost. To qualify, drivers must provide their odometer reading at the time of registration and not exceed 7,500 miles in a year.
Motorcycles are also only required to have one plate.
Why use rear-only plates? Many owners don’t like how front plates take away from the aesthetic of their vehicles. But dual plates are touted as a way to assist law enforcement with crime.
South Dakota offers more than a dozen different types of plates: construction, emblem, habitat conservation, Dignity sculpture, historical, amateur radio license, disabled person, firefighter, EMS, tribal, tribal veteran, veteran and several military plates.
