Grading 5 UCLA Starters After Loss to Ohio State
The Bruin had a rough game against Ohio State, still we saw a lot of improvement compared to their last matchup against Penn State.
This was simply not UCLA’s game, while there were times of great individual perfomances it was not enough to get over the edge. Looking ahead the Bruins next matchup will come against No. 5 Purdue; a game where the Bruins on this list will need to improve massively.
One of Donovan Dent’s better games of the season. However, it was not enough to help the Bruins to a win here. What was most surprising from this matchup was his three-point shooting. He took four shots, which is the most he has taken all season, along with his two makes, which matched his total number of threes made this season.
He earns a B+ because, while his scoring improved it was simply not enough to warrent a higher grade. Overall, not a bad performances especially with his seven assists to two turnovers. We just need to see more scoring as the season enters it’s last stretch.
After his 30-point performance, it seems like Trent Perry has come back down to earth. The scoring that made him so invaluable was not present in this one. However, it was expected to see shots start to miss. But this does not excuse his inefficiencies.
He earns C+, because outside of scoring he was able to make a impact facilitating and rebounding. For those reason we can’t give him a lower grade. Moving forward, we could see Perry’s role start to diminish once Skyy Clark comes back. While he had a case, this game proved how volatile he can be.
This really could have been a great game for Eric Dailey Jr if he had not fouled out early in the second half. He played just 18 minutes, but his production was what kept UCLA in the game in the first half. We will never know how good a game Dailey Jr would have had.
Daily Jr. played a great game, and this B rating could have been much higher if he had played the rest of the game. His grade feels pretty good, but moving forward, he cannot get into foul trouble, especially with how impactful a player he is.
Great game from Tyler Bilodeau. However, his scoring is a little inflated as his points came very sporadically. There were large stretches of time where Bilodeau would go quiet, especially at the start of the second half, where he didn’t find points until the 11:35 mark of the half.
A++ grades don’t come often, but Tyler Bilodeau earned every bit of it. Despite some inconsistency with his scoring efficiency, he still accounted for 40% of UCLA’s points. Add in nine rebounds, and his overall impact is impossible to overlook. Without him, the Bruins simply didn’t have many answers offensively.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — Police are investigating a shooting on Clinton Street in Marion, Ohio that has forced a multi-block closure in the area, authorities said Sunday evening.
Marion Police Chief Jay McDonald confirmed that officers are currently on the scene.
“Details [are] still being gathered and the scene is still very much active,” he said.
Details regarding potential injuries or suspects remain limited as the investigation continues.
The Marion Police Department issued an advisory closing Clinton Street between Brown Avenue and Brookside Drive.
Officials are asking the public to avoid the area until further notice.
No further information was immediately available.

Former ‘American Idol’ contestant charged with murder, staging crime scene in wife’s slaying in Ohio
Authorities in Ohio have arrested a former contestant on “American Idol” and charged him with shooting and killing his wife and staging the crime scene to mislead investigators.
Caleb Flynn, 39, pleaded not guilty Friday to charges of murder, assault and tampering with evidence.
“I just want to take care of my daughters. I’m not a risk,” he told Judge Samuel Huffman in a video of his arraignment from jail.
The judge set his bond at $2 million.
Ashley Flynn, 37, was found dead Monday after officers received a report of a burglary and shooting at a Tipp City home, according to a news release by Tipp City Police. Her husband and two children were inside the home when officers arrived.
In a 911 call released by authorities, a frantic Caleb Flynn tells a dispatcher someone broke into his home and killed his wife. He says she was shot multiple times in the head and he doesn’t know whether the intruder was still there.
“There’s blood everywhere, oh my god, oh my god, oh my god,” he says.
His attorney, Patrick Mulligan, said in a statement on Saturday he and Flynn were “disappointed and concerned about the short timeline and seeming rush to judgment in this case.” Police arrested Flynn on Thursday.
“When the government runs out of leads or can’t develop leads and looks at a surviving spouse in cases such as these, the chance of a wrongful conviction increases,” the statement said.
Tipp City Police Chief Greg Adkins defended the investigation, saying in an email on Saturday that it had “not moved fast.”
“Rather, it has progressed at a pace dictated by a thorough and deliberate investigative process,” he said.
Ashley Flynn was a middle school volleyball coach and substitute teacher, Tipp City Schools said on its Facebook page.
“She was known for her beautiful smile, warmth, kindness, and the positive impact she had on so many-both in and out of the classroom and on the court,” the post said.

• Records/Rankings: MSU is 21-5 overall and 11-4 in the Big Ten, and ranked No. 15 by both the Associated Press and USA TODAY Coaches poll. The Spartans are No. 12 in the NET rankings and No. 10 per the college basketball analytics site Kenpom.com. Ohio State is 17-9 overall, 9-6 in the Big Ten, and unranked by both major polls, while being No. 38 in the NET rankings and No. 36 by Kenpom.

• MSU update: The Spartans are coming off a much-needed win and performance Tuesday against UCLA. At 11-4 in Big Ten play, MSU is out of the Big Ten title race, but playing important games now for NCAA tournament seeding and, to a lesser extent, Big Ten tournament seeding. The Spartans are very much in the hunt for a 3 seed in the NCAA tournament, which would be a far better path than being a 4 or 5 seed in terms of their path to a deep run. Getting to a 2 seed isn’t out of the realm of possibility, though it would take some work, perhaps wins at Purdue and at Michigan.
Before the Spartans can worry about that, they’ve got to handle business at home against Ohio State. MSU is the No. 6 team in the country in defensive efficiency and No. 40 in offensive efficiency, per Kenpom, and the Spartans are No. 2 in defensive rebounding percentage and No. 6 in offensive rebounding. MSU point guard Jeremy Fears Jr. continues to lead the country in assists at 9.2 per game.

• Ohio State update: The Buckeyes just walloped Wisconsin, 86-69, Tuesday night for their most impressive win of the season. Senior guard Bruce Thornton, who’s become one of those players who it seems has been around for a decade, is playing like he’s determined to taste an NCAA tournament before he’s done. Ohio State last reached the Big Dance in 2021-22, the year before Thornton arrived. The Buckeyes have a decent shot to make it this season. Right now they’re projected right on the NCAA bubble by a number of bracketologists. The win over Wisconsin helped. Winning at MSU would do wonders for their case. Hurting their chances is a hand injury to sophomore guard John Mobley, the team’s second-leading scorer and most prolific shooter. Mobley is out indefinitely after having surgery on his hand after suffering the injury during the USC game on Feb. 11. Since he’s been out, Ohio State has lost to Virginia on a neutral court and bludgeoned the Badgers at home.
• Matchup analysis: The loss of Mobley hurts the Buckeyes. He was shooting 40% on 175 3-point attempts. Mobley’s replacement in the starting lineup, redshirt sophomore Taison Chatman, is a strong shooter, who’s made 2 of 4 3-point tries in each of his two starts and is 17-for-32 from deep on the season. Thornton is a three-level scorer. He’s the engine and an elite pick-and-roll guard, a bucket-getter more than he’s a distributor, though he’s had eight assists twice in the last three games. He’s also scored 56 points over the two games without Mobley. I don’t think MSU will want to risk Fears getting in foul trouble defending Thornton. I’d expect Jordan Scott to get that assignment and see if he can do to Thornton what he did to Illinois’ Keaton Wagler. Disrupting Thornton is the key to limiting an Ohio State offense that ranks 22nd nationally in Kenpom and is among the top five in the Big Ten.
While the Buckeyes have some shooters, they’re at their best inside the arc and getting to the free-throw line, where they shoot close to 80%. Devin Royal can be a tough matchup on the wing, but it’s one that MSU is equipped to handle with Coen Carr and perhaps Cam Ward. Christopher Tilly, a Santa Clara transfer, is 7-feet and skilled offensively, but not a great defender or rebounder.
• Prediction: The Buckeyes will be more invested in giving the Spartans a fight than UCLA was on Tuesday night. But this is the sort of game MSU ought to win at home — and one the Spartans have to win if they want to move toward a top 3 seed in the NCAA tournament and hope to get a top 4 seed in the Big Ten tournament, which comes with a double-bye. MSU has been too good at home for teams beneath the elite tier.
