FARGO — Vision Zero Driving Skills for Success is a driving program by the North Dakota Department of Transportation designed to give teens hands-on driving experience from law enforcement.

For the first year, they are hosting two events this summer in Grand Forks and West Fargo.

The first program will run from 9 a.m. to noon on July 11 at the Alerus Center in Grand Forks. An Aug. 2 event from 1 to 4 p.m. will take place at Veterans Memorial Arena in West Fargo.

From parallel parking to changing a tire, teens will be get the chance to do different traffic safety activities.

According to North Dakota DOT safety public information program manager Lauren Wahlman, teens are chosen for this event because they are new drivers and are typically less experienced.

“More teens are going to leave this event feeling more comfortable behind the wheel, especially those newer drivers with the permits.” Wahlman said.

“They’re going to be the future drivers so as long as we can get in there and give them these good habits as soon as possible, we’re going to have a better outcome as they become adults,” Wahlman said.

Drivers need to be 14 to 18 years old with a permit or a license to register for the one-day event. Parents can also attend alongside with their teen.

Registration is open for a free teen driving safety event and can be found at
