TOWNER, N.D. — The two individuals involved in a single-vehicle rollover crash which left one motorist dead in McHenry County have been identified.

Joey Mattern, a 46-year-old Rugby resident, was killed in the crash, which took place before 7:28 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 10, at the intersection of Willow Road and 69th Street Northeast, 4 miles north of Towner.

Ryan Anderson, a 47-year-old Towner resident, was seriously injured in the crash. Neither he nor Mattern were wearing seat belts. Potential charges for Anderson are under investigation, the North Dakota Highway Patrol said in a news release.

The crash occurred when the victim’s 2005 Chevrolet Silverado, traveling southbound on Willow Road, veered off the road, overcorrected and entered the east ditch. The vehicle rolled and Mattern was ejected. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Anderson was transported to the Heart of America Medical Center in Rugby for treatment.

The patrol’s news release did not indicate who was driving the vehicle.

In addition to the highway patrol, the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigations, Towner Ambulance Services and Towner Fire Department responded to the crash.

Towner is roughly 45 miles east of Minot.

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of “staff.” Often, the “staff” byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
