MINOT, N.D. (KMOT) – An 83 million federal grant has been awarded to businesses in 12 states to increase domestic fertilizer production.

According to the U-S-D-A, the price of fertilizer was high due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine at the beginning of the decade.

In North Dakota, Ray’s Farmers Union Elevator got a 1.5 million dollar grant to help increase its infrastructure as part of the Fertilizer Production Expansion Program.

It’s funded through the American Rescue Plan Act.

Erin Oban, state director for USDA rural development said the program should help the elevator provide more fertilizer to farmers in Williams, Burke, McKenzie, Mountrail and surrounding counties.

“We have a lot of producers up in that corner of the state and their ability to expand their production by more than 60% of what they’re currently providing will make a big difference hopefully in bringing down some fertilizer prices and keeping our farmers profitable,” said Oban.

The application process for the expansion program has closed.
