ND unclaimed property dispersed

A record $9.7 million dollars in unclaimed property was returned to North Dakota residents during the fiscal year that ended June 30th.

The amount of unclaimed property submitted by businesses to the Unclaimed Property Division also hit a record high of $20.3 million in fiscal year 2022-23 — a $4.6 million increase over 2the previous year.

Nearly 33 million people in the United States have what the industry calls unclaimed property: examples include unpaid life insurance benefits, forgotten bank accounts and uncashed checks.

Property held by the Unclaimed Property Division is invested as part of the Common Schools Trust Fund and generates revenue to support public K-12 education in North Dakota.
