ND legislature considers bill to eliminate lunch-shaming for kids with debt

BISMARCK, N.D. (KFGO) – What do colleges do when a pupil has lunch debt? Each district has completely different insurance policies however some have punitive and public-shaming strategies of getting children and households to settle up.

Landis Larson, president of the North Dakota AFL-CIO, says its time to finish these practices.

“The entire different college students can see that youngsters with debt are being handled in another way. It’s mistaken,” he mentioned. “We’d like to verify all our colleges have insurance policies that deal with our youngsters with dignity and respect, and get them the diet they have to be profitable college students.”

A bipartisan group of North Dakota legislators agree. Monday at 3:00 p.m. the Home Schooling Committee will hear testimony on HB 1494, which might get rid of the follow of lunch shaming.

The invoice forbids colleges from denying meals or serving various meals to children with lunch debt. It additionally prohibits figuring out children publicly, limiting their participation in additional curricular actions, or requiring college students to work to repay the debt.
