Peterson: Iowa’s Embarrassing Performance Against Iowa State a Reminder That Nebraska Isn’t Willing to Settle

Nebraska rolled Akron on Saturday, running away from the Zips in a 68-0 shutout, the first for the Cornhuskers since the 2009 Holiday Bowl. The Husker offense, nine days after a solid, if unexplosive, debut against Cincinnati, was particularly great. Removing the drive that finished the first half – one play, a kneel down – as well as the final drive of the game – five plays, 23 yards, game over – the offense gained 691 of a possible 710 available yards.

That’s 97.3%.

I’ve been watching Nebraska football since 1996, and if they’ve done something like that in close to three decades of football, I don’t recall seeing it. Even in the 77-14 win over Iowa State in 1997 or the 73-7 domination of Idaho State in 2012, the offense stalled and had to punt. Twice in each game, in fact.

Nebraska didn’t punt it a single time against Akron. Instead, their drives ended at the Akron one-yard line (twice), as well as the 17. Those three drives all happened in the first 16 minutes of the entire game, and with a 12-0 lead in the early part of the second quarter, I wondered to myself if we were watching the beginning of a sloppy, unexciting win.

Three Nebraska drives later, they were up 33-0, on their way towards halftime. They scored touchdowns on their first five drives of the second half, with starters and backups putting a definitive stamp on the most dominating home win by the Cornhuskers since 1982.

And it came 10 months after Matt Rhule made his boldest move as Nebraska’s head coach.

Not only did he bring Dana Holgorsen onto the staff with three games left in the 2024 regular season, but he also demoted Marcus Satterfield in the process. With Holgorsen as the coordinator, the Husker offense would explode for 44 against Wisconsin in the long-awaited sixth win of the season. And while Nebraska scored just 20, 10, and 20 in the other three games, all eyes were on 2025. “Imagine what he’ll be able to do with an entire offseason to learn the names of his players!” we all said. “Imagine what he’ll be able to do with an entire offseason to plan an offense around Dylan Raiola!”

We’re no longer imagining it; we’re seeing it unfold right in front of our eyes. The offense just had its best day in over a decade. Raiola had his best night as a Husker, going 24-of-31 (77.4%) for 364 yards (11.7 yards per attempt) and four touchdowns. Ditto for Emmett Johnson on the ground, rushing for 140 yards on 14 carries, scoring two touchdowns on the ground and catching another. The 728 total yards were the eighth-most ever by a Nebraska offense.

Matt Rhule’s late-season gamble is paying off, and if – and this is a big if – Nebraska is to take a big step forward, we’ll look back on that 2024 decision as the reason why.

If you’re a fan of college football, there’s a good chance you’ve seen the “Sickos Committee” Twitter account. It’s the one that finds fun inside the sport at all levels; the FCS rivalry you’ve never heard of getting gassed up one week, before weird mascot gifs get run the next. It includes the celebration of oddities on offense, defense, and special teams.

It’s inside this world that Iowa football lives.

The current iteration of the Iowa football program was seemingly built inside a lab specifically for the Sickos Committee. Take the Drive to 325, for example. It took over the internet two years ago, as the Iowa offense was the focus of a particular type of college football fan throughout much of the season. Would Brian Ferentz and the Iowa offense get to 325 points? If he couldn’t, he wouldn’t return as offensive coordinator in 2024. Follow along with graphics, videos, and highlights of each and every Iowa game! It was this way every single week. The Iowa football program was becoming a meme of its own creation.

In the end, the program announced on Oct. 30 of that year that Brian Ferentz wouldn’t return the following season. His offense was putting up 19.5 points per game, which wouldn’t even equal 325 points if the Hawkeyes played in the Big Ten Championship Game, College Football Playoff semifinal, and national championship game.

And yet, the 2023 Iowa Hawkeyes went 10-4. It was head coach Kirk Ferentz’s second 10-win season in three years and his third since 2019. In fact, since 2019, Iowa has gone 53-24. That’s a win percentage of 68.8.

And, of course, it’s come with an offense that’s been one of the worst in the entire country.

I found myself thinking about both Nebraska and Iowa a lot on Saturday. Their games bookended the day. Long before Nebraska put up its most points in 13 years, Iowa lost its annual rivalry matchup vs. Iowa State in typical Iowa fashion.

The Hawkeyes scored 13 points in the three-point loss to the Cyclones. They picked up 16 total first downs. They gained just 214 yards. And in his second game as Iowa starting quarterback, former FCS star Mark Gronowski put up a listless 83 yards* on 13-of-24 passing. His 3.5 yards per attempt would be terrible for a running back. To do so through the air was downright putrid.

*A stat has been going around that’s hard to believe, but is true; TJ Lateef, going 6-of-7 for 128 yards in mop-up duty vs. Akron, now has more yards through the air than Gronowski does – 127 – through two games.

It was embarrassing.

Which is what Iowa football has become.

Embarrassing.

Save me with all the wins they have over the last handful of seasons. And certainly, save me with their record against Nebraska* since 2015. I know what they’ve done. I did a damn podcast series that, in part, was built around the terrible losses Nebraska has had against Iowa! There’s no doubt that all of that is very much on the table again on Black Friday, not only because of the history between the two programs, but also because even after the horrific offensive showing by the Hawkeyes, Iowa State needed a 54-yard field goal to win Saturday.

*9-1, with the only loss coming in 2022 the day before news broke that Matt Rhule was the next Nebraska head coach.

This is who Iowa is, for all the wrong reasons. How many times have you heard, “This is exactly the type of game Iowa wants to play in,” like it’s some badge of honor that they average 3.4 yards per play and almost win a football game? The only reason Iowa football’s downfalls aren’t taken seriously is because their existence is taking place in the “sickos” era of CFB; they’re viewed as a cute story.

But Iowa football isn’t a cute story. They’re constantly wasting an incredible defense, with Bill Connelly’s SP+ rankings placing the Iowa defense at 1st in 2019, 1st in 2020, 3rd in 2021, 1st in 2022, 3rd in 2023, and 5th in 2024. The 2025 unit currently sits at 15th in the country.

They play great special teams.

They play great defense.

Their offense is a punchline.

They win football games.

Congrats, Iowa, you win games in spite of yourself. If your head coach took the offensive phase of football as seriously as he takes defense and special teams, you’d be an annual playoff participant. Not just a plucky underdog, but a Big Ten team to be reckoned with.

Logan Roy put it best on Succession; “You are not serious people.”

Nebraska running back Emmett Johnson scores on a 47-yard run against Akron.

Both Nebraska and Iowa still have nine games left in the regular season before they meet the day after Thanksgiving in Lincoln. Iowa’s offense won’t look that bad* every week. They’ll pick up wins in games that unfold similarly to Saturday’s loss vs. Iowa State. “This is exactly the type of game Iowa wants to play in,” will probably get said. And that sentiment won’t be wrong.

*At least, I don’t think it will. No guarantees!

Meanwhile, Nebraska’s offense will come back down to earth, perhaps as soon as this weekend against Houston Christian or the next against Michigan. But when Nebraska’s offense performs well this year, don’t forget what Rhule was willing to do – what the Nebraska program is willing to do – to scratch and claw their way back to respectability, if not outright relevance.

Nebraska football had no desire to win football games in spite of themselves. The 2024 offensive performances against Purdue, Rutgers, and UCLA were not good enough. Hell, the inability to finish against Ohio State in 2024 or even against Cincinnati in Kansas City wasn’t good enough. You could hear it in Holgorsen’s words last week.

Nebraska football won’t settle.

I won’t make any promises that Nebraska won’t lose in embarrassing fashion, but if you’re going to be embarrassing as a program, it might as well be because you try and fail, rather than the alternative.

Iowa football continues to lean into the alternative.

Nebraska women’s basketball dominates in 84-50 blowout win over Creighton

Nebraska (3-0) completed its initial homestand to start the 2025-2026 season on Wednesday night, taking on in-state rival Creighton (1-2). After losing their last three clashes with the Bluejays, the Huskers swiftly took the win in an 84-50 outing.

This is Nebraska’s first win over Creighton since 2021 and head coach Amy Williams’ second win all-time against the Bluejays. Though that win came in a low-scoring battle, Nebraska dominated from start to finish on Wednesday night. This is also the Huskers’ largest win over Creighton since 2005, when they ironically won by the same score.

After opening the game with a 17-9 first quarter, the Huskers held Creighton to five points in the second quarter, allowing them to enter halftime up 35-14. Nebraska kept its foot on the gas from there, outscoring the Bluejays 49-36 in the second half.

The Huskers shot 29-of-62 from the floor, while Creighton finished 15-of-51. Nebraska also hit 10-of-28 from three-point range and 16-of-20 from the free throw line. The Huskers also capitalized on turnovers, scoring 23 off the Bluejays’ 25 cough-ups.

Britt Prince finished atop the board for Nebraska, scoring a team-high 18 points and hauling in a team-high seven rebounds. She shot 6-of-12 from the floor and landed a perfect 6-of-6 from the foul line. Callin Hake hit a team-high 3-of-4 from beyond the arc and 4-of-6 from the floor to finish with 13 points. She also earned a team-high three assists.

Jessica Petrie and Claire Johnson each tallied 11 points in the win, with Petrie going 4-of-8 from the floor while Johnson finished 3-of-6. Petrie also hit 2-of-4 from three-point range, one of them being a buzzer-beater from beyond half court, and Johnson shot a perfect 4-of-4 from the free throw line. Petra Bozan finished just shy of double-digits in scoring, tallying nine points after going 3-of-6 from the floor, 1-of-2 from beyond the arc, and 2-of-3 from the foul line.

The Huskers hit the road for the first time this season, traveling up to Sioux Falls, South Dakota, for a neutral-site matchup against North Dakota State on Sunday. Tipoff is set for noon on the Big Ten Network.

Four Questions to Ponder as Nebraska Football Heads Into its Second Bye Week

Four Questions to Ponder as Nebraska Football Heads Into its Second Bye Week

The Nebraska football team is back on track after an exhilarating win over UCLA at the Rose Bowl this past Saturday night. The Huskers are now 7-3, their best record through 10 games since 2016. The Big Red will finish the season by playing at Penn State–a team that is both deeply flawed and immensely talented–and hosting Iowa at home on Black Friday. With optimism buzzing anew after true freshman quarterback TJ Lateef’s strong performance, we look at four questions for the Nebraska football team headed into the bye week.

How high can this offense fly under TJ Lateef?

Against UCLA, Lateef seemed to give the offense a spark they had been missing in recent games. The Huskers scored touchdowns on each of their first four drives against the Bruins, and they sealed the game by getting three 1st downs to allow the final four minutes and forty seven seconds to run off the clock.

Having a mobile quarterback is an extremely valuable element for any offense in college football, and it allows offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen to dial up some things that opponents haven’t seen Nebraska do in recent years. I would also suggest that losing starting quarterback Dylan Raiola to injury caused Holgorsen to lean more heavily on star running back Emmett Johnson, and EJ just keeps delivering.

The offense will face two of its stiffest tests of the season over the last two games. Can they do enough to help Nebraska win one or both of them?

How is John Butler stacking up?

There was a lot of angst, hand-wringing, and gnashing of teeth when former defensive coordinator Tony White left for Florida State last December–and for good reason. White drastically improved Nebraska’s defense immediately upon his arrival. In both 2023 and 2024, Nebraska’s defense was in the top 25 nationally in total defense and scoring defense, and in the top ten in the country in rushing defense. While the offense and special teams struggled in both of those seasons, the defense was good enough to keep the team in just about any game.

Enter John Butler. I believe the first-year coordinator is doing an excellent job this season. Nebraska currently has the #3 passing defense in the country, and the Blackshirts rank #13 nationally in total defense and #25 in scoring defense. What’s more, the D has had a knack for making timely stops when the team absolutely needs them, which directly contributed to wins over Cincinnati, Maryland, Northwestern, and UCLA. Yes, Butler’s unit has struggled against the run, but that was to be expected after losing major impact players like Nash Hutmacher, Ty Robinson, Jimari Butler, and John Bullock. The good news for Nebraska is that their front seven on defense is filled with lots of young talent, and you can bet Rhule and company will look to supplement this group in the transfer portal as well.

One could argue the defense has taken a small step back this season, but I would argue they have been good enough to give Nebraska a chance to win every game, and the future is bright under John Butler.

How will the Huskers finish?

Penn State has been a dumpster fire this season, but let’s not forget a few facts: they were a top five team at one point this season; they were about a play or two away from beating both Oregon (currently #8 in the latest CFP rankings) and Indiana (currently #2); and they still have Penn State-level talent. What’s more, Nebraska has to go to Happy Valley for this one. By no means should we take PSU’s struggles as an indication that they are ready to roll over for the Huskers.

Meanwhile, Iowa looks like your standard issue Iowa team, playing excellent defense and special teams. Their offense appears to be improved this year as well, with mobile quarterback Mark Gronowski bringing an added element that we haven’t seen from the Hawkeyes in recent years (they’re not the 1983 Scoring Explosion, mind you. But any offense coming out of Iowa City is an improvement over the last couple years). It helps that this one is in Lincoln, but given Nebraska’s struggles to stop the run this year, combined with the fact that this game has been a nightmare for the Huskers for a decade, the Big Red will have to play their absolute best to emerge with a W.

What will the Huskers’ record be when the sun sets on Black Friday? There’s a big difference between 7-5 and 9-3.

What record would constitute a successful 2025 season?

On that note, what record does Matt Rhule need to achieve for this season to be considered a success? If they can win one of the last two regular season games, plus the bowl game, they will finish the year 9-4 and I believe the vast majority of Husker fans would consider that a successful season, especially in light of the injury to Raiola. If they win out, of course, Common Fans will be dancing in the streets from Omaha to Scottsbluff.

At minimum, I think Rhule needs to win one of the last three to show that this program is on track and making the kind of progress to get them back to the kind of national relevance Husker fans crave. Finish 8-5, they’ll be one win better than last season, and I think most fans are satisfied but anxious for more in the years to come. 9-4 or better, and we’ll be frothing at the mouth for eight months, dying for the 2026 season to begin.

As always, GBR for LIFE.

Gov. Pillen signs charter allowing Norfolk company to operate as ‘first-of-its kind’ digital asset bank

LINCOLN, Neb. (WOWT) – Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen signed a charter Wednesday allowing a Norfolk-based company to become a digital asset bank, “the first of its kind in the United States.”

The charter subjects Telcoin to state regulation and backs its cryptocurrency “predominantly” with federal bonds or FDIC-insured Nebraska banks. The move turns Telcoin turning them into “stablecoins,” known as eUSD as they’re tied to the U.S. dollar, in an effort to increase public confidence in — and use of — digital wallets by providing an alternative to other popular yet more volatile forms of digital currency.

“For Nebraskans, stablecoins — a version of cryptocurrency designed to maintain a steady value — may soon be another payment option alongside checks, debit cards, and digital wallets,” Wednesday’s release from the governor states.

“Our message to the industry is simple: Nebraska is open for your business.”

Kelly Lammers, director of the Nebraska Department of Banking and Finance, noted that the “special-purpose bank” had come together under state law. In the application advanced by Lammers in February, Telcoin said it had begun the filing process on October 2023 — two years after the Nebraska Financial Innovation Act, put forward by then-State Sen. Mike Flood, went into effect.

“This special purpose bank is designed under Nebraska law to ensure the payment is always good,” Lammers said in Wednesday’s release.

Paul Neuner, founder and CEO of Telcoin, applauded state officials, calling the charter a “milestone.”

“This charter is a milestone in the history of banking, but it also demonstrates that rural communities can play a part in emerging technologies — Norfolk, Nebraska can be at the center of the internet of money.”

“We’re very thankful to Governor Pillen, Congressman Flood, Director Lammers and his team for having the vision to see that this is about more than cryptocurrency. It’s about the technology of money, payments, and banking — financial technology innovation right here in Nebraska,” he said in Wednesday’s release.
