NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) – The Nebraska International Port of the Plains held its first meeting of the year at Trego/ Dugan Aviation at First National Bank on Monday.

A legislative proposal is on the table, and the North Platte board was out of the conversation.

The Urban Affairs Committee in Omaha held its hearing on Senator McKinney’s amendment to LB164. The amendment would update a state law that was planned to develop large commercial and industrial projects here in Nebraska. This law is found underneath the Municipal Inland Port Act. The law states that there can be only five Inland Port districts in the state. McKinney’s bill would increase that number to seven.

“They had a hearing about adding to that number and we didn’t receive notice or we weren’t aware of that hearing,” said Patrick Keenan Vice Chair of Inland Port Authority. “We would have liked to have been there and express some of our concerns about adding them too fast and having too many and diluting the opportunities for each.”

The board plans to express their concerns to Sen. Jacobson, and if the bill makes it to the Legislative floor the board hopes Jacobson will communicate their concerns.
