The planning behind one of southwest Missouri’s biggest Super Bowl watch parties
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – As the countdown to the big game continues, fans around the Ozarks are starting to think about where they’ll be watching the Super Bowl.
Many restaurants and bars around the Ozarks are gearing up as well, so we wondered, what goes into planning the biggest Super Bowl watch party in southwest Missouri?
From bleachers to projectors to a lot of food, quite a bit of effort goes into planning one of the Super Bowl watch parties. It’s the third year they’ve held one at Arrowhead South, Coyote’s Adobe Cafe, and according to the owner they actually lose money after it’s all said and done.
“It is absolutely a labor of love,” said Coyote’s Adobe owner David Bauer.
Hundreds will make the trip from across Chiefs Kingdom to Springfield to watch the big game, for the third year in a row.
“First year was the biggest year so far, because it’s the first time that we’ve won,” said Bauer. “And so the deal with the Super Bowl then the second year was still big, but it just wasn’t like the first year. This year, I think it’s gonna be bouncing back to be as strong as the first year.”
With a projector, massive bleachers, extra food, staff, and more, it’s an expensive night, but what’s surprising is that according to the owner, Coyote’s Adobe won’t be making back as much as you’d think.
“We’ll probably lose $6,000 to $7,000,” said Bauer. “We use this as our marketing for the entire year knowing we’re the place that has these events. I’d like to say we make money but we don’t. It’s okay, though. I’m good with that.”
But, Bauer says, depending on the weather he could be out more than he thought.
“Worst case scenario, if it’s a bad storm, we won’t hold something outside, we have to worry about people’s safety, but we’ve done them in the cold and we’ve done them in the heat.”
He says the most popular order is wings. A lot of wings.
“We’ll go through probably somewhere in the case of 35 cases at 40 pounds a case and 256 wings to a case,” said Bauer. “You know, we just do 1000s of wings.”
If you’re good at quick math, 35 cases with 250 wings a piece means they’ll be ready with around 9000 chicken wings, all in preparation for one night, and if you plan on attending, Bauer says get here early if you want a good spot.
