Aviation event aims to inspire Milwaukee youth: 'It was wonderful'

Aviation event aims to inspire youth

Members of the Milwaukee County Youth Commission took flight on Saturday morning. An event was held at Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport.

MILWAUKEE – Members of the Milwaukee County Youth Commission saw the city from a different perspective on Saturday morning.

The Young Eagles Rally Flight took commission members from the ground at Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport to the skies. The event aimed to inspire a passion for aviation and introduce youth to potential careers in the field.

“It was wonderful. I got to see Milwaukee from a different view,” said Daniel Damon of Milwaukee, the youth commissioner for District 10. “On commercial airplanes you won’t be able to see the different views of Milwaukee. I got to see the top of the skyscrapers and stuff like that, which is cool.”

Milwaukee County Youth Commission aviation event at Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport

The Milwaukee County Youth Commission was reestablished in May 2022. It serves as a representative body for the county’s youth and provides advisory recommendations to the Board of Supervisors. There are 20 members, including at least one commissioner per supervisory district.

“I am excited to provide our youth commissioners with this exciting opportunity,” Supervisor Kathleen Vincent, who organized the event, said in a statement. “I organized this event to help our young leaders explore new perspectives and gain insights into the field of aviation. My hope is that it inspires a lasting interest in aviation and opens up new career paths for our youth.”

43-year-old killed in shooting near 18th and Burnham in Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE — Milwaukee police are investigating a shooting that left a 43-year-old dead Wednesday night.

The shooting happened around 10 p.m. near 18th and Burnham. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.

An investigation into what led up to the shooting and the search for suspects is ongoing.

Milwaukee police seek clues in shooting death of man near community garden

Milwaukee police are investigating the Nov. 25 shooting death of a 49-year-old man on the city’s northside, and are asking for the public’s help in finding the culprit.

Officers were called to the 3500 block of West Galena Street just before 6 p.m. and found the man’s body near a community garden.

On Nov. 26, the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the man as Major C. Milan.

In a statement, Milwaukee police said the circumstances leading up to the shooting remain under investigation.

In all, 138 homicides have been reported in Milwaukee this year, according to the most updated Milwaukee police data. During the same period in 2024, 120 killings had been reported in the city, en route to 132 homicides for the entire year, police statistics show.

Milwaukee police say they continue to seek unknown suspects in this case.
