Oil spill shuts down part of St. Mary’s River in northern Michigan

The U.S. Coast Guard closed a bit of the St. Mary’s River in northern Michigan Thursday following an oil spill, it stated. 

The spill, reported at 8:30 a.m., originated from Algoma Metal, a Canadian firm, the Coast Guard stated.

The river was closed on the Soo Locks to 9 Mile level on Sugar Island, simply north of Lake Nicolet, a 12 mile stretch, stated Coast Guard Lt. Daniel Rynard.

The leak of substances oil got here from a 5,300 gallon container within the Algoma Metal mill in Sault Ste. Marie, throughout the St. Mary’s from Soo Locks. 

The container has stopped leaking oil. Rynard couldn’t present an estimate of how a lot oil leaked into the river.
