Michigan man convicted in fire deaths of wife, 3 sons

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – A Grand Rapids man blamed for a fireplace that killed his spouse and three sons was discovered responsible Friday of 4 counts of involuntary manslaughter.

The Kent County jury deliberated about an hour and a half earlier than convicting 40-year-old Robert Scales.

Prosecutors mentioned he used a fireplace pit too near his household’s dwelling.

Scales was at work on the time of the fireplace. He mentioned the fireplace was out when he left for work, however investigators mentioned they imagine winds picked up and presumably despatched a burning ember towards a mattress stacked subsequent to the home.

The Feb. 4, 2020, fireplace killed 35-year-old Wanedia Scales and the couple’s three sons, 15-year-old Xavier Woleab, 14-year-old Robert Scales Jr. and 10-year-old Elijah Scales.

Prosecutors mentioned the fireplace pit was lower than 6 toes from the home and that Scales had been burning trash and leaves there earlier that day.
