Kansas 4-H Team Wins National Contest

The Kansas 4-H All Star meat judging staff was topped nationwide champions, beating groups from 14 states throughout the 4-H Meat Judging Contest championship held on the American Royal in Kansas Metropolis.

It’s the first-ever nationwide title for a Kansas staff, which gained by 27 factors over Texas. The competition has been in existence since 1970.

“The Kansas staff was profitable as a consequence of their work ethic,” stated Katie Lybarger, a meat science graduate scholar at Kansas State College and the staff’s coach.

Along with Lybarger, the staff was coached by Steph Witberler.

“Steph and I loved teaching this staff as a result of it was a chance to speculate again into the following era of meat judging,” Lybarger stated. “We each competed on the Okay-State meat judging staff and located the expertise to be extremely impactful.”

Lybarger credited the 4-H members’ coaches and volunteers on the native degree who, she says, “have invested years into these youngsters.

Individually, 4 Kansas 4-H members positioned within the high 10, together with Stubbs (first), Perrier (third), Fankhauser (fifth) and Fry (seventh).

Perrier was second in retail minimize identification, third in retail minimize judging and oral causes, and fourth in whole judging. Fankhasuer was fourth in beef judging. Fry was third in whole judging and fifth in retail minimize judging.

College students evaluated six lessons of carcasses or cuts and gave three units of oral causes throughout the contest. Moreover, they recognized 30 retail cuts and specified the species, primal, and cookery of every. This 12 months, the staff evaluated pork carcasses, beef ribs, pork loins, beef rounds, porterhouse steaks, and pork blade chops. Causes got on the pork carcasses, pork loins and porterhouse steaks.
