Iowa Secretary of State confident in election integrity

The day’s local, regional and national news, detailed events and late-breaking stories are presented by the ABC 6 News Team, along with the latest sports, weather updates including the extended forecast.

(ABC 6 News) — In Iowa, Secretary of State Paul Pate says he is confident in the state’s election integrity this fall.

This comes after Donald Trump posted concerns of the post office’s ability to mail absentee ballots on time on social media on Monday.

Pate says several things are being done to ensure security including voter IDing, pre-testing equipment, and post-election audits. The Secretary of State’s Office also has an election security tip line.

Arkansas State vs. Iowa State Prediction, Betting Odds & How To Watch

What an interesting season Arkansas State is having thus far.

The Red Wolves arguably should have lost against Central Arkansas in Week 1 if not for an officiating mistake that the Sun Belt admitted to. Then they beat Tulsa of the AAC 28-24 and then went to Michigan and played a competitive contest before falling 28-18.

Arkansas State has another chance at another ranked Power Four foe in Week 4. The Red Wolves (2-1) go on the road to take on No. 20 Iowa State (2-0).

Arkansas State vs. Iowa State Prediction

I predict Iowa State will win but Arkansas State will cover the spread at +21.5. I also project the game will go Under 51.5 total points.

Iowa State recently defeated in-state opponent Iowa 20-19, undoubtedly an impressive performance against a ranked program. Between that and their 21-3 win over North Dakota, the Cyclones have given up just 22 points in two outings.

But Arkansas State’s defense has also been solid recently, especially against Michigan. And if the Red Wolves can keep it a 10-point game in a low-scoring affair against the Wolverines, I think they will again against Iowa State.

Iowa Medical Society Says Physician Shortage In Iowa Is Concerning – KIWA Radio

Iowa — Leaders of the Iowa Medical Society say the state faces a workforce crisis in the healthcare sector. Dr. Christina Taylor is president of the Iowa Medical Society’s board of directors.

Iowa already ranks 45th in doctor-to-patient ratio.

Dr. Gerard Clancy is a clinical professor of psychiatry and emergency medicine and one of five deans at the University of Iowa’s College of Medicine. He says the number of physicians, nationally, does not match demand.

Iowa Medical Society CEO Steve Churchill says the group will ask the 2025 Iowa Legislature to provide state funding to significantly increase the residency slots for medical students at Iowa hospitals and academic centers.

The group will be asking lawmakers to fund the creation of 200 more residency slots — at a cost of 20 million dollars a year. The Iowa Medical Society will also recommend expanding state programs that erase college debt for physicians who choose to practice in Iowa after getting their medical license. The Iowa Medical Society leaders discussed the state’s physician shortage during a weekend appearance on “Iowa Press” on Iowa PBS.

Iowa Hawkeyes Reveal Major Roster Move With Rising Star

The Iowa Hawkeyes’ offense has had a lot of trouble over the last couple of weeks, but one bright spot for the team has been its running game.

It’s not just Kaleb Johnson, either.

A new star may be emerging for Iowa, as sophomore running back Jaziun Patterson carried the ball eight times for 72 yards and a touchdown in the Hawkeyes’ Week 3 win over the Troy Trojans.

Well, Patterson is being rewarded as a result.

Iowa has released its depth chart ahead of its Saturday matchup against the Minnesota Golden Gophers, and Patterson has now established himself as the No. 3 halfback on the squad behind Johnson and Kamari Moulton (h/t Black Heart Gold Pants).

Patterson supplanted Leshon Williams to grab the role.

The 20-year-old electrified the crowd at Kinnick Stadium with a 39-yard touchdown dash in the fourth quarter of the Hawkeyes’ victory against Troy, putting an exclamation point on what was a breakout performance for the youngster.

Patterson arrived at Iowa City in 2022, but played in just three games. He redshirted and received more playing time last year, but he was mostly unproductive, rushing for 206 yards and a couple of touchdowns while averaging 3.6 yards per carry.

As a result of Patterson’s lack of output, he began the year off Iowa’s depth chart entirely, but he has now worked his way into the mix thanks to his strong showing in Week 2.

Considering that Moulton has not exactly been lighting it up in the early stages of 2024, it may only be a matter of time before Patterson becomes Iowa’s No. 2 running back.
