Administration says new University of Iowa Health Care campus could keep more medical professionals local

NORTH LIBERTY, Iowa (KCRG) – The University of Iowa is calling the opening of a new hospital “historic.”

Friday morning University of Iowa Health Care held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate its new North Liberty campus, which will open on Monday, April 28, 2025.

Not only are they expecting to expand job opportunities, but short and long term care for current and future patients.

“This expansion of capacity together with the downtown campus really allow us to treat more patients that are being referred to us,” said UIHC CEO Brad Haws.

Another major aspect of this expansion is the orthopedic department. The 469,000 square-foot facility includes a center for orthopedic surgery, inpatient and outpatient services, and a walk-in clinic for orthopedic injuries open in the evenings and on the weekend.

“This facility offers a new level of comprehensive orthopedic care that has not previously been available in the state,” said UI Carver College of Medicine Dean Dr. Denise Jamieson.

Administration is hopeful these new additions in a new location can help attract more people to the area, and in turn, help fill each position at the facility.

“I already heard from one of our leaders in the community this place has brought her brother back to Iowa to practice here,” said UI President Dr. Barbara Wilson. “So that’s what we’re interested in doing now, not only taking care of patients but attracting talent back here to make sure that we can manage the health care needs of the entire state.”
