IHSAA 4A state baseball championship: Penn vs. Indianapolis Cathedral

INDIANPOLIS — Ben Gregory fired a three-hit masterpiece and small-ball Penn manufactured runs in three of the opening 4 innings to defeat Indianapolis Cathedral 3-0 in Saturday evening’s Class 4A state baseball championship at Victory Area.

The Kingsmen claimed their fifth state title, all beneath Greg Dikos, matching the soccer program for the varsity’s most in any sport.

Gregory — on his strategy to the first-ever state finals shutout by Penn — struck out seven and walked none to go together with a first-inning hit batsman. All three hits off him had been singles, and he picked a type of baserunners off.

After the sport, Gregory was named the IHSAA’s psychological perspective award winner.

Zac Hoskins singled within the first inning, stole second, superior to 3rd on Cam Dombrowski’s grounder and scored the one run the Kingsmen (26-6) would want on a handed ball.

Within the second inning, Cooper Hums drove in a run with a floor out, and within the fourth, Hoskins plated the ultimate run with an RBI single.

Cathedral, which beat Penn 4-3 in eight innings within the 2017 state title sport, closed at 18-11-2.

The Kingsmen improved to 5-1 in state finals, their different crowns coming in 1994, 1998, 2001 and 2015.
