An Indiana man locked in his own 85-year sentence after accidentally recording the murder of his mother’s boyfriend in a voicemail.

Cody Allen Wade, 33, was handed the hefty punishment Wednesday, after he was found guilty last month of the 2020 killing of Carl Haviland.

Wade had left a voicemail on his mother’s phone in the seconds before he stabbed Haviland four times, but failed to hang up before carrying out the attack.

His mother was also present to witness her son kill her boyfriend.

“The defendant repeatedly stabbed Carl Haviland not only in front of the defendant’s own mother but did so in spite of her efforts to physically prevent him from committing the crime,” the judge wrote in a sentencing order obtained by PEOPLE.

After stabbing Haviland, Wade kicked and taunted his victim.

The killer plotted his crime beforehand, prosecutors said.

Wade left a cookout and headed to his mom’s house in Brazil, a city 60 miles southwest of Indianapolis, stopping along the way at another man’s house to tell him he was about to kill someone, the documents state.

At the time, he was on parole for arson. He had been released from jail in March 2020, just two months before the murder.

He was sentenced to 60 years for the murder with an additional 15 years added since he was found to be a habitual offender.

Wade was also given 10 years for two separate counts of felony battery on a public safety official with injury and was given concurrent sentences for three other charges: felony battery against a public safety official and misdemeanor resisting law enforcement, county records show.

Wade will receive credit for the days he’s already served in jail.
