France to honor Indiana World War ll veteran
WALDRON, Ind. (WISH) — WW2 veteran Howard Bettner, 98, of Waldron, IN will likely be awarded France’s highest distinction for his participation within the liberation of France throughout WW2.
Consul Normal of France in Chicago, Yannick Tagand, will formally current the Legion of Honor medal to Bettner at his house in Waldron on March 21.
Throughout WW2, Bettner served within the Navy and was assigned to the European Theater. He participated within the well-known Normandy landings on June 6, 1944, touchdown troopers within the first and second waves at Omaha Seashore. Bettner revamped 40 roundtrips between France and England, returning causalities and prisoners, and introduced again troops and provides.
Bettner was honorably discharged in February 1946 and was awarded many distinctions for his service throughout the struggle, together with WWII Victory Medal, the European-African-Center Japanese Service Medal with one Bronze Star, the American Medal, the Amphibious Pressure Commendation, and the Good Conduct Medal.
