'Save A Lot' skimmers: Detroit police looking for alleged criminal duo
DETROIT (FOX 2) – Police say two suspects are targeting grocery stores throughout Metro Detroit, planting skimmers to try and steal money from unsuspecting shoppers.
Big picture view:
Skimmers have been around for a while and incidents have even increased to 368% compared to four years prior. Now, an alleged criminal duo is going around placing skimmers in three different stores to steal from shoppers and businesses.
What they’re saying:
The picture above is who Detroit police say are the suspects. They tell FOX 2 that they have been all over installing skimmers that will take your debit/credit card information, leading to identity fraud.
Since their spree started, police say they have hit three ‘Save A Lot’ stores, one on 8 Mile near Lasher, another on Gratiot by Mt. Elliot, and a third in Conner near Warren. The store chain says they were quickly discovered and removed.
It takes seconds for criminals to put a skimmer on, and most of the time they travel in pairs. One would install the skimmer, while the other distracts workers if needed.
Experts say to avoid becoming a victim to a skimmer, avoid swiping your cards, use tap to pay or your chip.
Cardholder data is not collected into the machine if you use these methods.
Set your fraud alerts to the most sensitive settings with your bank or credit union.
If you recognize the two men in the picture above, call the Detroit police.
