Saturday was the second big-time pressure situation kicker Jake Bates found himself in this week.
It turns out Bates, Scott Daly and assistant special teams coach Jett Modkins made the finals of the Lions Fowling tournament earlier this week but lost in a close final.
“We had this Fowling competition and he’s in the championship and he makes two critical throws in crunch time and there’s something about this kid that’s intriguing,” Campbell said. “He’s got a little bit of confidence to him.”
Bates said after kicking a game-winning 43-yard field goal to walk it off for the Lions against the Chiefs, he tries to stay as even-keeled as possible and never gets too high or too low depending on the situation. Fowling included, he joked. He made all four of his field goals against the Chiefs (55, 23, 32, 43) and was 1-for-2 on extra points.

“It feels good to make kicks,” Bates said after the game. “Obviously, I can’t have that (missed) extra point happen. I can’t put our offense in that situation where they have to go for two in the fourth to tie it. So, just keep getting better and never settling is big. But making kicks is always fun.”
Dan Campbell just looks like a coach. He’s a former NFL player and still has good size; he’s intense on the sidelines; and he’s always seen wearing a hat.
The Detroit Lions are coming off a huge divisional win against their rivals the Green Bay Packers in Lambeau Field. It was a rain-soaked, smash-mouth affair which suits their rough and rugged looking coach just fine.

The Lions now sit at 7-1 and lead the NFC North division. Whatever Campbell is doing is clearly working in Detroit. But as a coach, you don’t get a lot of time off during the season. Before the Green Bay game, however, Campbell and wife Holly Campbell got a “rare” date night in for some Italian food in Detroit. She posted a picture of the coach dressed up and without his signature Lions cap on, which made him look unrecognizable with his hair.

Wow, he’s got a full head of hair under there. And it’s great to see him enjoying some much-deserved wine.

Dan and Holly have been married since 2005. They have two children together: a son named Cody and a daughter named Piper.
Dan played in the NFL for 11 years with the New York Giants, the Dallas Cowboys, the Lions, and the New Orleans Saints before retiring after the 2009 season.

The Lions are back in action on Sunday vs. the Houston Texans, and no doubt so is the coach’s hat.

DETROIT – Two people were killed and four others were injured during a shooting in Detroit over the weekend, police said.
The shooting happened at 1:34 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 3, at a home in the 6300 block of Devereaux Street.
When officers arrived, they discovered that six people had been shot during a house party, with two of them being killed.
Police say the circumstances surrounding the shooting and suspects are unknown at this time.

An investigation is ongoing.

The improving Arizona Cardinals are a team to watch out for as they won 29-9 against the Chicago Bears, who had not allowed more than 21 points in their previous 13 games.
