University of Akron star, NE Ohio native drafted into NBA

CLEVELAND (WJW) – A Northeast Ohio native and University of Akron alum is officially joining the NBA.

Enrique Freeman was picked by the Indiana Pacers during Round 2 of the NBA Draft Thursday evening. He was the 50th pick overall.

Freeman, who previously played for Cleveland’s St. Martin De Porres High School, is a 6′ 7″ power forward whose draft stock kept rising since the draft combine.

While playing for the Zips, according to the NBA, Freeman became a four-time MAC All-Defensive team member, two-time First-Team All-MAC member and two-time MAC Tournament MVP (2022, 2024). He also won 2022 MAC Defensive Player of the Year.

During his last season in college, Freeman averaged 18.6 points, 12.9 rebounds, 1.6 assists, 1.7 blocks and 0.8 steals.

Cleveland State Women’s Tennis Battles For 4-3 Victory Over Miami (OH) – Cleveland State University


CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State women’s tennis team continued its spring season Sunday morning, battling for a 4-3 victory over Miami (OH). With the win, the Vikings are now 2-2 on the young season.

After dropping the doubles point and then falling at No. 5 singles, the Vikings were able to put their first point of the day on the board with a 6-2, 6-4 win from Ella Franz at No. 4 singles.

Miami (OH) was then able to gain a 3-1 advantage with a win at the No. 6 spot, before Sima Heren gave Cleveland State its second point of the day with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 2 singles.

Oihane Vicario then evened the match at 3-3 with a 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 win at the top of the lineup, while Tereze Vevere clinched the match for the Vikings with a 7-5, 4-6, 6-2 win at no. 3 singles.

Cleveland State will be back in action for a single match next week, traveling to Toledo on Friday, January 31.

Undermanned GB men's hoops drops 17th straight at Cleveland State


CLEVELAND, OH. (WLUK) – Green bay men’s basketball came into Saturday losers of 16 straight and were missing key starters in a visit to conference leading Cleveland State.

Not only did Phoenix keep it competitive, they would lead in the 1st half on multiple occasions.

Over 10 minutes in jumped ahead 14-13 after two of Yonatan Levy’s game high 19 points.

By far Green Bay got their most bench production of the season which including a game-tying three from Ben Tweedy with a little over a minute of the 1st half remaining. Following possession took a 2pt advantage after Levy found a cutting Preston Ruedinger.

Ultimately Phoenix trailed by just 1 at intermission 34-33 and would keep it close nearly to the end, down just 64-62 with 5:30 left.

Vikings pulled away in the final stretch to win 81-66, but still was a good fight from the undermanned Phoenix against top team in conference standings Cleveland State.

Former Cubs star Anthony Rizzo makes adorable announcement on social media


Anthony Rizzo is set to have a new title soon.

Father.

The former Cubs star, who most recently played for the Yankees, announced on social media Thursday that he and his wife Emily Rizzo are expecting

The adorable announcement featured the couple’s beloved dog wearing a “big brother” bandana and standing alongside a set of ultrasound photos. A onesie in the background appears to hint at a June 2025 due date.

The couple wed in a Florida ceremony in 2018, with several Cubs players in attendance at the time.

Rizzo returned to Wrigley Field for the first time since being traded to New York last September. He remains a fan favorite in Chicago, however, having cemented a legacy in the city that culminated with the 2016 World Series win.

And his Cubs teammates were among those congratulating him on his latest milestone.

“Congrats bro to you and @rizzoem,” Dexter Fowler wrote.

“Papa Tony,” Ian Happ commented.

“Let’s gooooooo! Congrats!!!” Albert Almora Jr. wrote.

“Tonyyy! Congrats!! @rizzoem 💙” Jason Heyward commented.

Fans were also quick to comment on his announcement — and remind him of Chicago’s love.

“Congrats rizzo!! chicago will love you forever,” one commenter wrote.

“Congratulations!! You and Emily will be such great parents! Hope to see you back with the Cubs organization someday,” another commented.
