Twins recall Louie Varland

CLEVELAND, OH – The Minnesota Twins announced today that they have recalled right-handed pitcher Louie Varland from Triple-A St. Paul.

Varland has gone 5-1 with a 3.92 ERA (66.2 IP, 29 ER), 22 walks, 63 strikeouts and a .265 (69-for-260) opponent batting average in 13 games (12 starts) for the Saints since June 23. This is his third stint with the Twins this season, previously being with the club from April 14-15 and May 3-June 20 and going 3-3 with a 5.30 ERA (56.0 IP, 33 ER), 16 walks and 54 strikeouts in 10 major league starts.

To make room for Varland on the 28-man roster, the Twins have optioned right-handed pitcher Cole Sands to the Saints. Sands posted a 3.74 ERA (21.2 IP, 9 ER) with 13 walks and 21 strikeouts in 15 appearances for the Twins this season.
