Three Observations From Guardians Loss To Rangers, 5-3
The Cleveland Guardians are still looking to get back in the win column as they dropped their series opener with the Texas Rangers, 5-3.
Here are three observations and takeaways from Cleveland’s latest game.
The box score doesn’t do Tanner Bibee’s night justice.
He came out strong in the first inning and immediately got three of Texas’ first four batters. However, he had trouble in the second inning by giving up four runs as the Rangers nearly batted around.
What separates a team’s ace from a typical starting pitcher is how they respond after facing adversity.
Even though Bibee had a tough inning, those were the only runs he gave up in his start. He went on to pitch 5.1 innings, striking out six batters and walking just one. He even finished the game with 14 swings-and-misses.
Despite the loss, Bo Naylor still had an impactful way both on offense and defense.
Naylor was responsible for Cleveland’s third run of the game as he ripped a single to right field in the bottom of the fourth inning, which scored Andres Gimenez from second base. These are the types of hard hits that the Guardians need to get from their catcher more often from this part of the lineup if they want to get the offense back on track.
Bo also played a key role on defense. He caught Josh Smith stealing in the bottom of the fifth which ended that inning.
Something still looks off with Steven Kwan’s swing, and it hasn’t been trending in the right direction for the one-time American League batting average leader.
Kwan went 0-for-5 from the plate and recorded the final out in Cleveland’s series opener against the Rangers with one strikeout. Overall, he made a lot of relatively weak contact and chased pitches out of the zone.
The Guardians need to figure out a way to get Kwan back to the hitter he was earlier in the season. He’s at the top of the order to set the tone in the box and on the base paths and the offense is hurting witohut him.

Part of West 29th Street in Ohio City closing for pedestrians
CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) – The City of Cleveland announced the temporary two-week closure of West 29th Street, expanding space for pedestrians and community use.
The closure between Clinton and Church Avenues will run from August 24 through September 8. The City of Cleveland wants to make neighborhoods more enjoyable and accessible for pedestrians.
During the closure, community volunteers, and small businesses are hosting several free events.
“The goal is for West 29th Street to become a Street for People — a street that is open for public use free of car traffic,” said Joyce P. Huang, Director of the City Planning Commission. “Already, there are residents and small businesses organizing family days and community meetups. This temporary two-week Open Street allows people to test the space and inform how the permanent space’s use should look and feel.”
The planned programming follows a community engagement meeting from April in which dozens of residents, business owners, and other community members joined in the design and planning phase of this project, according to a press release from the city.
.For more information on events and gatherings during this period, follow @west29th_openstreet on Instagram. Visitors to the Open Street can give feedback through an online survey using a QR code on site.
If you are interested in volunteering for events during this period, email Britany Pabon at bpabon@clevelandohio.gov .

Cleveland Cavaliers’ Donovan Mitchell Earns Massive NBA 2K Rating
Cleveland Cavaliers star Donovan Mitchell has established himself as one of the best guards in basketball, and he is being recognized for it.
NBA 2K has been revealing the top 100-rated players in increments over the last several days, and on Thursday, it revealed Nos. 11 through 20.
Coming in at 14th on the list was Mitchell, who earned a 92 rating for NBA 2K25.
Mitchell was tied with Jaylen Brown, Kyrie Irving and Kawhi Leonard, which is some pretty impressive company. All three of those other players are NBA champions, with Brown having captured his first title with the Boston Celtics this past season.
Mitchell was also ranked ahead of the likes of fellow guards Ja Morant and Tyrese Haliburton, who both notched 90 ratings.
The 27-year-old signed a three-year, $150 million contract extension with the Cavaliers earlier this offseason, putting any trade speculation to rest. At least for now.
Mitchell is coming off of a 2023-24 campaign in which he was limited to just 55 games due to injuries. During the time he was on the floor, he averaged 26.6 points, 6.1 assists, 5.1 rebounds and 1.8 steals over 35.3 minutes per game on 46.2/36.8/86.5 shooting splits. He made his fifth straight All-Star appearance for his efforts.
Cleveland initially acquired Mitchell in a blockbuster trade with the Utah Jazz back in September 2022.
The Cavs have experienced moderate success since Mitchell’s arrival, winning 99 regular-season games and making the playoffs in each of his first two years with the team. The Cavaliers went 48-34 and lost to the Celtics in the second round of the playoffs this past season.
We’ll see if Mitchell can lead Cleveland on a deeper run in 2025.
