OHIO (WOIO) – The Ohio Department of Education and Workforce released the 2024 Ohio School Report Cards grading the achievement of districts and schools Friday morning.
Districts and schools are graded on a scale between one and five stars “to provide parents, caregivers, community members, educators, and policymakers with valuable information about school performance, identify areas for improvement, and celebrate achievements,” according to the report card guide.
Cleveland Municipal School District earned three stars which means it meets the state standards, according to the report.
This is the first time CMSD earned a 3-star rating, according to a release.
CEO of CMDS Dr. Warren Morgan shared the following statement:
These ratings are based on five components: achievement, progress, early literacy, gap closing and graduation.
Achievement
The achievement component measures the performance index for students in third-grade through high school on Ohio’s State Tests.
The achievement performance index score accounts for the level of achievement for every student and not just whether they scored a proficient level. Each test is assigned an achievement level based on test scores, and higher scores mean higher achievement levels with larger weights in calculations, according to the report.
Progress
The progress component measures the overall value-added which refers to the statistical analysis used to measure the impact of districts, schools and teachers on the academic growth of groups of students year to year, according to the report.
This is assessed by comparing current achievement results with prior achievement results.
Early Literacy
The early literacy component measures proficiency in third-grade reading by seeing how many students score proficient or higher on the reading portion of the Ohio’s State Test in third-grade English language arts, according to the report.
It measures promotion to fourth grade and the improvement of kindergarten through third-grade reading.
Gap Closing
The Gap closing component measures the gifted performance indicators which evaluate the performance of students identified as gifted, according to the report.
It also measures the chronic absenteeism improvement indicator which takes the rates and compares them to annual goals.
The English Language Arts proficiency is also compared against annual goals.
This component also evaluates if student groups met their school or district met their four or five-year graduation plan.
Graduation
The Graduation component creates weights based on graduation rates on either a four or five-year scale.
