New area code for Northeast Ohio starts today: Who will have 436?

CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) – New phone numbers in Northeast Ohio will start to see a different three digit area code as 436 starts its usage on March 1.

The newest area code, 436, will be for any new number in: Ashtabula, Eastlake, Elyria, Lorain, Mentor, North Olmsted, North Ridgeville, North Royalton, Parma, Solon, Strongsville, Westlake, and Willoughby. It will work, essentially, in the same areas as the 440 area.

New area codes are needed whenever a certain code has more than about seven million numbers. Once that is maxed out, new phone numbers get allocated to the new code to avoid numbers being doubled.

For anyone who has a 440 or 216, your number will not be changed. This is only for those who will be receiving a new number.

The impact on people already with a number is minimal, as the only thing this ensures is the need to dial full 10-digit numbers when making a call.

Phone numbers with 216 are not expected to run out until 2039, which will be the next time a new area code is needed in Ohio.
