Guardians’ game vs. Diamondbacks postponed; doubleheader set for Wednesday
CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Guardians and Diamondbacks will play a doubleheader beginning at 1:10 p.m. on Wednesday after rain and severe weather forced the postponement of Tuesday’s regularly-scheduled matchup.
Gates will open at 12:10 p.m. ET and only fans with tickets to the originally scheduled August 7 contest will be able to attend the traditional twin bill.
Fans will be able to use the full value of their August 6 (Tuesday) tickets in the Guardians My Tickets account when exchanging into one of eight designated games, including Wednesday’s doubleheader.
Tickets for Tuesday’s game must be exchanged by 5 p.m. on Aug. 30.
Heavy storms moved through downtown Cleveland several hours before the scheduled first pitch, and the threat of more rain forced officials to eventually postpone Tuesday’s game.
Guardians players and coaches were taking infield practice just before 4 p.m. when grounds crew members pulled the tarp across the field and ballpark workers were instructed via the public address system to seek shelter below the main concourse.
According to the National Weather Service, conditions that could potentially produce a tornado were spotted in the area including wind gusts in excess of 60 mph. An announcement that the game would officially begin in a delay was made at 5:48 p.m. Officials postponed the contest at 8:15 p.m.
Right-hander Ben Lively (10-6, 3.42) will start Wednesday’s first game for Cleveland. Righty Carlos Carrasco (3-9, 5.53) will start game two.
Arizona will send righty Brandon Pfaadt (5-6, 3.97) to the mound in game. Lefty Eduardo Rodriguez, who signed a four-year, $80 million contract with Arizona in the offseason, will make his season debut for the Diamondbacks in game two.
Cleveland optioned Monday’s starting pitcher, Logan Allen, back to Triple-A on Tuesday afternoon, selecting the contract of LHP Anthony Gose from Columbus and designating righty Xzavion Curry for assignment.
