Some call for Jones College Prep principal to resign over alleged misconduct, Title IX violations

CHICAGO (WLS) — Members of the Jones Native Faculty Council are calling on Jones Faculty Prep principal Joseph Powers to resign, alleging he ignored studies of alleged misconduct on the college for years and violated Title IX protections for college students.

Jones Faculty Prep is likely one of the prime selective enrollment faculties in Chicago Public Faculties, and has obtained nationwide awards. However now some dad and mom need Powers gone.

“Not caring about studies from marginalized college students and lecturers is a dereliction of our duties,” stated Leni Manaa-Hoppenworth, guardian consultant in Jones Native Faculty Council.

Members of the council say Powers has ignored studies of alleged misconduct on the college for years.

“Together with verbal abuse, a menace of bodily violence, sexual harassment, grooming and sexual abuse in opposition to each college students and workers victims,” stated Cassie Creswell, chair of Jones Native Faculty Council.

“Administration has stated, ‘I do not know what’s flawed until somebody tells me.’ They’ve been telling you for years,” stated Sarah Ma, guardian consultant.

The native college council detailed the allegations in a partially-redacted letter in February to CPS CEO Pedro Martinez. The LSC additionally accused the administration of “violating Title IX” anti-discrimination legal guidelines, alleging, “…long-standing disparities [in resources] between ladies and boys sports activities groups…” and stated it is “…dedicated to the protection and well-being of [its] college students and takes all allegations of worker misconduct severely.”

“Each one that walks via these doorways deserves respect and care,” stated Manaa-Hoppenworth.

Powers didn’t reply to ABC7’s request for remark. Earlier in March he despatched a letter to oldsters, accusing the LSC of “interfering in personnel issues” and “initiating direct contact with college students and workers members for functions of attacking college management.”

Final week, the LSC voted to request that CPS start the formal means of firing Powers. CEO Martinez has 45 days to reply.
