Disney Magnet School student, 7, injured after gun goes off in backpack, Chicago police say

CHICAGO (WLS) — A 7-year-old scholar suffered a graze wound after a gun went off at Disney Magnet Faculty on Chicago’s North Aspect Tuesday morning, officers mentioned.

Police mentioned the gun was dropped at the college at 4140 N Marine Drive when it unintentionally went off in a backpack inside a classroom.

The bullet struck the bottom and ricocheted, grazing a 7-year-old scholar within the abdomen space.

The scholar was transported to Lurie Kids’s Hospital in good situation, police mentioned. It’s believed the coed’s accidents are non-life-threatening.

Space Three detectives are investigating.

Principal Paul Riskus despatched a letter to oldsters saying, “The security of your youngsters is my prime precedence, which is why I’m writing to tell you of an incident that occurred as we speak. This morning throughout faculty hours, a gun was unintentionally discharged on faculty grounds. The gun discharged in a backpack and hit the ground, inflicting some harm and releasing particles. Our employees instantly intervened, secured the gun, and contacted the Chicago Police Division (CPD) and the CPS Workplace of Security and Safety. Fortunately, nobody was critically injured and everyone seems to be protected. CPD responded to our faculty rapidly and confiscated the gun. We’re working carefully with the CPS Workplace of Security and Safety to make a security plan transferring ahead.

“Please know that we’re taking this example extraordinarily critically, and CPD is investigating this incident. Many college students are conscious of this incident. In case your little one voices any fears or worries, otherwise you discover a change of their habits, please tell us and we are able to present them with further help. If you happen to or your little one ever see any regarding habits, please contact a trusted grownup on the faculty instantly so we are able to report the knowledge to CPD.
