Robust is how I think of myself. I’m 55, a regular cold water swimmer, fairly lean. I barely drink and don’t smoke. So when the personal trainer Matt Roberts mentions that he offers a bone health programme and suggests that I have a bone scan at Evolution, his health club in South Kensington, I’m slightly offended. “Why would I need that?” I go, cursing myself for being polite.

Which is how I find out that I have osteoporosis.

The diagnosis comes courtesy of Paul Magee, a sports therapist for Profortis Bone Health, using the latest technology — an Echolight specialised ultrasound scan — to assess my bone mineral density (BMD). It gives similar readings to a Dexa scan and takes minutes. “You are in the
