LA Mayor Karen Bass appoints Matt Hale as deputy mayor of finance

LOS ANGELES — Following the announcement that Deputy Mayor Jeanne Holm will retire, Mayor Karen Bass tapped Matt Hale on Monday to serve as deputy mayor of finance, operations and innovation.

Hale, who has served as the director of legislative and intergovernmental affairs for the Department of Water and Power for the last year, will oversee city departments that provide services to the city in hiring, technology and facilities. In addition, he will aid in the city’s annual budgeting process.

“Matt brings more than a decade of experience working in City Hall on the annual budgetary process and in partnership with city departments for the good of Angelenos,” Bass said in a statement. “I look forward to working with Matt in this new role, and I want to thank Jeanne Holm for her leadership as deputy mayor of finance and innovation this year.”

Hale previously served as deputy chief of staff for City Council President Paul Krekorian and as a legislative consultant in the state Assembly.

Hale completed his undergraduate degree in government at California State University, Sacramento.

Holm is retiring after more than seven years of “serving the people of Los Angeles by improving innovation, technology and data access including to broadband internet during the pandemic,” according to a statement from Bass’ office.

During her time, Holm oversaw the mayor’s budgeting and performance management processes, personnel, sustainability and data management, among other responsibilities.
