Review: Part family drama, part crime saga, ‘The Devil You Know’ struggles to find its way
Whereas it does put an attention-grabbing spin on the phrase from which it takes its title, the household drama with crime parts “The Satan You Know” stumbles.
Written and directed by Charles Murray, the movie stars Omar Epps as Marcus, a recovering addict and ex-con decided to get his life again on monitor. He has a supportive household with three grown brothers and is falling for a candy new woman (Erica Tazel). When brother Drew (William Catlett) appears to be like as if he could also be getting concerned in one thing harmful, Marcus makes a daring transfer to attempt to defend him. His actions have wide-ranging penalties.
“Satan” performs extra as a drama than a criminal offense movie, with the brothers specifically establishing sturdy chemistry. The budding romance is straightforward to root for. The mayhem is stored to a minimal.
Sadly, the entire film tends to sag. The place it may very well be pulled taut, scenes and even photographs really feel too lengthy. In consequence, although it’s beneath two hours, it feels longer. The strain by no means builds sufficient to maintain momentum going. And one character’s actions to cowl up a criminal offense on somebody’s behalf can have some viewers shouting, “However that makes it a lot worse!”
One additionally needs Marcus’ struggles with sobriety have been extra explored (it’s a key aspect however doesn’t really feel skilled), and a few character turns really feel abrupt. Sadly, each the climax and the precise ending really feel stopped quick, rushed.
Whereas the dramatic focus is a welcome change for the style, some tightening and trimming would have made for a greater “The Satan You Know.”
