“Keep the Evening,” written and directed by Renuka Jeyapalan, is any such movie, and it really works rather well. Jeyapalan has stored it easy, easy sufficient that the 2 characters—Grace (Andrea Bang) and Carter (Joe Scarpellino)—have an area to work together, hear, take one another in, get to know one another. To cite Celine in “Earlier than Dawn” once more: “I imagine if there’s any sort of God it wouldn’t be in any of us, not you or me, however simply this little area in between.” Jeyapalan creates that “little area,” and her two actors, with glowing chemistry between them, enable their characters to emerge, tentatively, in the direction of a connection. It is such a pleasure to observe this relationship develop.

Grace is first seen begging for a brand new place within the HR division the place she works. Her boss tells her no, she’s too “reserved” and “standoffish.” Grace is crushed. She would not wish to be “reserved” anymore. Her “reserve” is shutting her off from life. Grace’s vivacious buddy Joni (Humberly González), at the moment crashing on Grace’s sofa, urges Grace to be extra open, perhaps speak to males, flirt, have some enjoyable. Grace simply cannot. She’s too resistant, too shy.

Throughout city, Carter, an expert hockey participant, is given the dangerous information by his coach: he is being “despatched down” to the minors. Carter’s enjoying is less than par. The workforce places him up in a swanky lodge for the night time, and the next morning he has to go to Syracuse for his new “task.” Carter just isn’t joyful about it in any respect. With out hockey, what even is he going to do together with his life?

Grace and Carter meet in a bar. Or, to be extra correct, they meet outdoors a bar, and find yourself sharing a cab. As an alternative of happening alone to her residence, Grace—wrestling mightily with herself—will get out with Carter. He hasn’t made one transfer in the direction of her. The 2 go as much as his room in complete silence. Carter follows her lead. Maybe he thinks he hit the jackpot when this random stranger decides to come back to his room for an apparent purpose, however then, about ten minutes later, Grace races out of the lodge in tears, with Carter in pursuit. Why she is in tears, and why Carter pursues her, is greatest left for the viewers to find. Suffice it to say, they resolve to get a drink, introducing themselves on the stroll over: “I am Carter, by the way in which.” “Grace.”
