UNC basketball lands surprise commitment from Virginia Tech transfer Jaydon Young
Well, no one saw this commitment coming!
The UNC basketball program added some guard depth, securing a commitment from Virginia Tech transfer Jaydon Young.
Jaydon Young has committed to North Carolina, he tells @greenlightbball.š
He averaged 16.3PTS in his final six ACC gamesā notably scoring 27PTS vs. Miami & 26PTS vs. Syracuseš

Young originally committed to High Point this offseason, but coaching changes led for the former Virginia Tech Hokie to reevaluate his options. This led him to Chapel Hill, bringing the 6-foot-4 guard back to his home state to continue his college basketball career.
I give him (and North Carolina) credit: NO ONE had any inklings that this was even in consideration!
Anyways, Young spent the first two seasons of his college career at Virginia Tech. This past season, Young’s role increased and his production followed suit, averaging 8.1 points, 1.7 rebounds and 1.4 assists per-game in more than 22 minutes per contest.
Young put up some big-time performances down the stretch, scoring in double-figures in each of his final six games of the 2024-2025 season. He scored 27 points in a win over Miami and followed it up two games later with a 26-point outburst in an overtime victory over Syracuse.
While he likely will be a rotational piece, Young is a guy who can provide a spark in any role he’s utilized in. His shooting percentages are not eye-popping (which could be a result of taking a large number of shots), but given his attempts should be much lower once he arrives in Chapel Hill, the hope is that he’ll be able to be more effective with more space and opportunities to work with.
This was a very random commitment but one that makes a lot of sense for the UNC basketball program, as Jaydon Young provides some much-needed depth at the guard position. He becomes the latest piece to this puzzle, a group that will look a lot different than the team we saw during the 2024-2025 season.

DC-area man hopes to race from Annapolis to Bermuda by boat
The boat that Kevin Sherwood of Springfield, Virginia, bought is still in dry dock as he makes final repairs and preparations ahead of the whole reason he bought the āBay Retrieverā in the first place.
If all goes as planned, heāll get it in the water Wednesday, and starting at noon on Friday, heāll be heading south down the Chesapeake Bay on a 753-mile voyage to Bermuda.
Sherwoodās boat is one of 21 in this yearās Annapolis to Bermuda Oceans Race, or A2B, which dates back to 1979. Heāll be joined by a crew of four others in a race he said is among the most challenging on the East Coast.
āI bought this boat in 2022 specifically for the Bermuda race,ā Sherwood said. āSince I bought this, everything weāve done has been prepping for it.
āPlenty of sailors never leave the Chesapeake. Itās very different when weāre dealing with ocean waves, ocean weather, all kinds of different conditions. So, the boat really needs to be set up for it.ā
The bay, being both relatively shallow and surrounded by land, can make for ideal sailing; if something still goes wrong, help isnāt far away.
Heading out in the blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean to an island more than 600 miles off the coast can present more difficult circumstances. Yet, if you go on the raceās website, youāll see a long list of people hoping to get picked up by a boat to help take part.
āWeāre out of rescue range for a portion of the trip. Theyāll ask a passing freighter to come help you if you have a problem,ā Sherwood said. āWe are on our own out there.ā
Some boats will have full galleys available to help cook meals for the crew. But Sherwoodās vessel, being smaller, has been stocking up on food and water from the grocery store.
He and the crew will take turns sailing and resting in the cabin down below. A āleak lossā ā imagine a hammock, more or less ā will catch anyone if the boat leans one way while theyāre sleeping, lest they fall to the floor.
Of course, that assumes theyāll have strong winds and waves. Sherwood, who has done this race twice before, said thatās not always the case.
āMy first Bermuda race, we had plenty of nothing going on,ā he said. For two days, the winds were so calm Sherwoodās team was ābarely making two knots.ā
Two years ago, he saw more clouds than stars and sun, and waves were running 12-15 feet high.
āThe last couple of races we havenāt seen many sunsets because of clouds, fog, rain, that sort of thing,ā Sherwood said. āBut when you are out there all alone and just the stars, itās incredibly detached. Thereās really nowhere left in the country to get this isolated.ā
Of course, having access to Starlink means there is some connection out on the water ā though, if youāre on duty, youāre too focused to care. If youāre not, youāre probably resting.
āThereās definitely parts Iām going to hate,ā he said. āThereās parts Iām going to be asking myself, āWhy am I doing this? Why am I here?ā But itās just such an awesome team sport. When I go off watch, Iām trusting the other guys to keep sailing, keep racing, to keep us safe, to keep the boat moving fast. We get to detach from the world.ā

For how long is anyoneās guess. Weather and winds will determine the time it takes to get there.
āIf conditions are amazing, weāll get in on Tuesday,ā he said. āIf conditions are great, Wednesday. If theyāre average, Thursday, and if theyāre terrible, Friday.ā
Those following from home can track Sherwood and everyone else in the race online. Whenever he arrives, he said workers on the docks will have a āDark nā Stormyā ā one of Bermudaās national drinks ā waiting for them.
Heāll also be hoping to be handed a trophy he can sail back with, but thatās not the most important thing right now.
āThereās a point of pride just for completing this; 753 miles of ocean sailing is a big deal,ā he said.
āSo, yeah, I mean, I want to do well, but my first goal is just to make it back here safely in two and a half weeks. My next goal is to make it to Bermuda safely. Then my third goal is to finish well and get a podium finish again.ā
