Report: Falcons re-sign Mike Hughes
FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. — The Atlanta Falcons are re-signing cornerback Mike Hughes, according to a report from ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.
Fowler’s report states the contract for Hughes is for three years and $18 million.
Hughes first joined the Falcons in 2023 after signing a two-year deal. The former first-round pick started just four of the 15 games in which he played during his first year in Atlanta. Last season, though, Hughes started all 15 of his appearances. So, he earned a bigger role in his second year with the Falcons, and his performance in that role apparently secured him a future with the team.

Between the 2023-24 seasons, Hughes totaled 87 tackles, six of which were for a loss, and seven pass breakups.
Prior to arriving in Atlanta, Hughes played for the Minnesota Vikings (2018-20), Kansas City Chiefs (2021) and Detroit Lions (2022). Across those three teams, he made a combined 18 starts in 57 games – fewer than his 19 starts in two years with the Falcons.
Hughes has three interceptions on his resume, the most recent coming in 2021 with Kansas City. He had back-to-back seasons with an interception to begin his career, including a 28-yard pick-six as a rookie. Hughes has yet to record an interception with the Falcons.
He also has a total of seven forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries, although none have come in Atlanta.

Hughes figures to return to the starting role opposite fellow cornerback A.J. Terrell in 2025, barring any unforeseen addition to the roster. Falcons general manager Terry Fontenot has maintained since his arrival the team will add players at any position if they will help make them better, and it’s possible they draft one in a deep class. Terrell signed a four-year contract extension last offseason, meaning he’ll be in Atlanta through at least the 2028 season.
Of the 30 Falcons players who were set to become free agents when the 2025 league year officially begins Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET, Hughes is reportedly the second to learn he’ll be back in Atlanta for at least another season. Long snapper Liam McCullough’s contract was extended last Thursday.

Decatur schools launch new security measures and mental health support for students
The city of Decatur is outlining the steps it’s been taking to boost security at schools.
This spring, the school district says it is launching a new reporting system and placing a deeper emphasis on students’ mental health through wraparound services.
The district says it’s responding to national trends in school incidents and working to align with standards set by the state legislature.
“Any student in grades 4 through 12th grade, if they see something and they want to say something, 24 hours a day, there is someone on the other end of that line that will be able to walk them through those next supports,” said Superintendent Gyimah Whitaker.
“I like that there’s a plan in place,” said Sarah McFarland, a parent in the school district. “I think that when crisis hits, a lot of times, people go into fight or flight, and I think it’s very valuable that they have their steps in place.”
The district says it is prioritizing students’ psychological safety along with their physical safety through its latest measures. Its new reporting program is inspired by the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary, is being implemented so the district can be in lockstep with other sizeable school districts throughout the state also installing these reporting systems.
Parents and the district say concerns over security are heightened because of the political climate.
“I want to make sure that children are able to receive education and not feel threatened because it is their right to have an education in this country,” McFarland said.
Decatur’s police and fire departments are partnering in the reporting program. The district also revived its school resource officer program this school year, placing two SROs at middle and high schools.”

Jealous ex-boyfriend opens fire into woman’s car at Atlanta nightclub
Michael Bowers (Fulton County Sheriff’s Office)
ATLANTA – An early-morning shooting in the parking lot of a northwest Atlanta nightclub was sparked by a jealous man last month, according to police.
What we know:
Michael Bowers, 44, was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, two counts of criminal damage to property, discharging a firearm near a roadway, reckless conduct, and felony obstruction in connection to the shooting on Jan. 17.
According to the Atlanta Police Department, an officer was patrolling in the 1200 block of Marietta Boulevard near Kennesaw Drive around 3:20 a.m. when they were flagged down by a security officer from the Vivide Atlanta nightclub.
The security guard told the officer a man had just been disarmed after shooting into vehicles. Despite a second security guard attempting to detain the man, he ran away. Additional officers were called to the scene and after briefly resisting, police say they were able to take Bowers into custody without further incident.
Bowers was transported to the Grady Detention Center to be treated for injuries he suffered during the tussle.
Investigators would later learn Bowers had gotten jealous that his ex-girlfriend was inside the club speaking with another man, so he left and came back with a gun. Investigators said the man then shot up his ex’s unoccupied car, damaging it and another vehicle.
No one was injured. Four shell casings were recovered at the scene. Police say Bowers is also a convicted felon.
What we don’t know:
Authorities have not specified how Bowers, a convicted felon prohibited from owning firearms, obtained the weapon used in the shooting.
