Kalen DeBoer explains yelling at Alabama football player in Missouri game
Kalen DeBoer isn’t usually animated on the sideline for Alabama football. Throughout his first season as head coach, if he’s shown any ire, it has usually been pointed toward the officials.
However, toward the end of Saturday’s shutout win over Missouri, DeBoer was spotted by the ABC broadcast delivering a shouted lecture to reserve offensive lineman Roq Montgomery. When asked about the moment before a Monday speaking engagement with the Birmingham Monday Morning Quarterback Club, DeBoer initially didn’t remember the moment, but then was able to recall what happened.
“Just things that are happening that you just want to be better,” DeBoer said. “Just moments that we were going through and I just felt like there were some things we could do better with how we were handling and being composed.
“And that’s just the expectation for everyone. It doesn’t matter whether you’re on the field for the first time at the end of the game, up or down, We’ve been emphasizing doing things the right way and playing to the standard.”
The Missouri game was a crucial contest for Alabama, as a loss would have likely eliminated its chance for a College Football Playoff bid. With two losses, the rest of the schedule will be the same way, starting Nov. 9 at LSU.
As for the standard, DeBoer spoke of, he made clear that it wasn’t only for Montgomery, a redshirt freshman from Anniston.
“Roq’s a great kid,” DeBoer said. “It’s not specifically about him. It’s about everyone.”
Alabama has a bye week before the Nov. 9 LSU game, which is scheduled to kick off at 6:30 p.m. CT that day in Baton Rouge. The game will be aired on ABC.
