Four Steelers Stealing Show at Minicamp

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers wrapped up mandatory minicamp or organized team activities this week at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex and the makings of a strong squad are clear with some stars emerging from the fray.

After four weeks of practices, Nick Herbig, Jaylen Warren, Van Jefferson and Calvin Austin III have looked like they are ready to lift the Steelers with massive seasons after strong starts in preseason practices. As the offense looks for a bonafide No. 2 option next to George Pickens and the running game figures to feature prominently, Warren, Jefferson and Austin making strides are critical for the Steelers.

But there are some off-the-field topics that had to be addressed. Najee Harris was absent for the first day of minicamp with approval from head coach Mike Tomlin. Then he spent the next two days on the sidelines as a non-participant. Whether or not this relates to Harris’ contract situation is unclear but Steelers general manager Omar Khan said that the team is still open to possibly signing Harris to a long-term deal, despite declining to pick up his fifth-year contract extension.

The Steelers head into a break now but the news never stops. There are still plenty of preparations to make and details to sort out before they arrive at St. Vincent College in Latrobe, Pennsylvania to get their 2024 season underway.

Small fire extinguished at Jake’s Fireworks HQ in Pittsburg | Newstalk KZRG – KZRG-AM

No injuries were reported after a small fire at the Jake’s Fireworks corporate headquarters in Pittsburg, Kansas, Friday morning.

Officials say it happened around 10:30am when the company’s alarm system went off and was able to alert staff to evacutate.

“Local fire and police departments responded quickly and were able to contain and extinguish the fire within a short period of time,” said Chief Human Resources Officer Doug VanBecelaere. “The incident was isolated to the maintenance building located on the southeast corner of the warehouse property.”

They closed the facility early but plan to reopen for normal operations on Monday.

Another candidate with Pittsburgh ties emerges as Steelers OC candidate

The Pittsburgh Steelers are set to interview Minnesota Vikings passing game coordinator and tight ends coach Brian Angelichio for their open offensive coordinator position.

Angelichio has worked alongside Kevin O’Connell in Minnesota over the last four seasons, holding the same title for all of those years. He has earned other interview opportunities for open offensive coordinator gigs, such as the Miami Dolphins.

Angelichio worked with the Packers and under Mike McCarthy in 2016 to 2018. He started his coaching career in 1995 by coaching the secondary at SUNY-Brockport, and he worked his way up to the college ladder.

One of those stops was in Pittsburgh, becoming an offensive assistant and tight ends coach at Pitt from 2006 to 2010.

In 2012, Angelichio made the jump to the NFL, taking on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ tight ends coaching job. Since that time, Angelichio worked for the Browns, Commanders, and Panthers.

Angelichio has worked under O’Connell multiple times, hence why he joined him, and that background would bring a different flavor than McCarthy’s background.

Pittsburgh has most of their coaching staff filled, but tight ends coach, offensive coordinator, special teams coordinator, and defensive line coach remain the open spots that McCarthy still has to fill on his staff.

Egor Chinakhov and Anthony Mantha scored on rushes in a 31-second span in Pittsburgh’s four-goal second period, helping the Penguins beat the Chicago Blackhawks 6-2 on Thursday night for their fifth straight victory.

Connor Dewar scored twice, Ben Kindel and Ryan Shea added goals, and Arturs Silovs made 17 saves. Mantha, Shea and Noel Acciari each had two assists.

The Penguins had been off since sweeping a four-game trip with a victory over Vancouver on Sunday, with forward Bryan Rust starting a three-game suspension for a check to Canucks forward Brock Boeser’s head.

Connor Murphy and Connor Bedard scored for Chicago, and Soderblom stopped 38 shots in the first game of a back-to-back. The Blackhawks have lost four straight, falling 4-3 in a shootout in Minnesota on Tuesday night.

Kindel gave Pittsburgh a 2-1 lead at 5:54 of the second period. He came down the left side and beat Soderblom to the far side with a wrister.

Chinakhov slipped a shots between Arvid Soderblom’s leg pads with 4:30 left in the period, and Mantha also beat Soderblom through the legs with 3:59 to go. Shea capped the spree with 30 seconds left in the period, and Dewar added his second of the night with 6:01 left in the third.

Bedard fired a wrist shot past Silovs with 5:21 to go for his 21st of the season.

Murphy opened the scoring for Chicago at 9:32 of the first. Dewar tied it 1:52 later.

Penguins forward Rutger McGroarty was recalled from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League for his NHL game since sustaining a concussion in practice Jan. 6. He had five shots, three hits and a block in 10:36.

Blackhawks: Host Columbus on Friday night.

Penguins: Host the New York Rangers on Saturday.
